PLOT:
Years ago, when the Justice League of America first formed, the team of America's greatest heroes met at a place known as the Secret Sanctuary nestled in a hidden sea-side location in a quaint town known as Happy Harbor. In years since the Sanctuary has been abandoned, re-purposed for a time as the headquarters of Young Justice and then abandoned again. It stands now as a memorial to times past. A testament to what are perhaps the League's finest hours. And it's here, after a devastating attack from Prometheus, that the remnants of the once powerful Justice League of America meet to decide the fate of the Nation's premiere superhero team.

There was a time when Vixen once promised Superman, before he left Earth for New Krypton, that she would do whatever she could to keep the JLA alive. Now, propping herself up with a metallic cast over the leg Prometheus shattered in three places, she stands looking out at the handful of heroes who responded to her call - Dr. Light, Plastic Man and Red Tornado - and questions whether or not the League has any purpose anymore. And even though the meeting's location was chosen in an attempt to instill some sense of dormant camaraderie, Mari already knows in her heart the answer to her question.

Plastic Man can barely keep his shape anymore after Prometheus messed with his mind. The dripping mess of a hero struggles just to keep his human form, let alone any shape necessary to fight evil. And Kimiyo now sports a sling over her arm. Though between work and her children, it's a surprise she has time to attend the meeting at all. Red Tornado may have escaped the battle intact but now a days even he has a family at home to attend to. It's clear to everyone present that these are not the League's brightest days. And the reasons to call the whole thing off just keep piling up. But before any decision can be made on the matter, the giant pink space tyrant Despero comes smashing through the Sanctuary's walls with the hero Gypsy clutched in his hands.

Even on their best days, Despero is a challenge for the JLA, but as stated earlier, these are not those days. He tosses the unconscious Gypsy through the air before breaking through Plastic Man's restraints with ease and punching a hole through Red Tornado's chest! If it weren't for the sudden arrival of Zatanna it would probably be curtains for Vixen and her crew. But before Zatanna can banish Despero to the center of the Earth, he simply vanishes.

Perplexing as that may be, Zatanna tells the others that something far worse is afoot. Right now, back in DC at the Hall of Justice, a horde of undead Black Lanterns is attacking Firestorm and the others! Though details at this point are still sketchy it's clear that the League is needed now more than ever. But as they all race towards the Hall of Justice, little do they realize that an all together different and perhaps even more dangerous threat awaits them. And former JLA member Blue Jay has already given his life trying in vain to warn them!
