Riddler is the original clue-dropping criminal. He delights in challenging Batman and Robin with his puzzles that he leaves behind at crime scenes, always pointing to where he will be next.
Although he was a high school dropout, Riddler is still intelligent enough to give the Caped Crusaders plenty of headaches solving his clues, which are often many-layered and contain several possible solutions.
ABOUT THE RIDDLERS
Frank recalls being called for the show; “I was flattered that he did think of me, and I was excited too, because as a kid I loved reading Batman comics and I never thought that someday I might be able to play that character that wears the question marks and left the riddles. I relished it. I wanted to do it. I didn’t have to audition or anything. They asked me and I agreed.” Frank Gorshin was the one to set the pace, so to speak. He was the first villain to go up against Batman in the series. Not only that, He was the first one to actually play the Riddler on a live action set. When Frank got the part nobody told him what do to. But when the pilot was filmed, he got the part immediately.
After the pilot was filmed it was hard to get Frank back to play the Riddler. He felt that he was a serious movie actor and he kinda looked down on the show and the character. Dozier was the one that got him back and eventually Frank grew to love the Riddler, to have his own life with him. When the show canceled Frank was disappointed. He said that he didn’t get to do everything he wanted to do in the show.
Frank wasn’t the only person to play the Riddler. In the second season John Astin, better known as Gomez in the Addams family, took the part for two episodes. Frank had a commitment at a nightclub, which he couldn’t cancel. The studio wanted to do the Episode at that time. So instead of waiting, they figured that Frank was indispensable. Frank says he was really offended that they put his clothes on someone else. But he understood the logic. There was nothing they could do. They had a schedule to keep.
Frank came back to play the Riddler in season three. His performance will always stay with us. He set the mood for The Riddler
Frank Gorshin stayed part of the Batman Methos. He recently lent his voice for the Part of Hugo Strange in "The Batman". However on Tuesday May 17th, 2005, Frank Passed Away.
