Nobady could get to Batman like the slinky seductress Catwoman. Julie Newmar played the part puurrrfectly. Julie said that her role in Batman came out of the blue. She had never heard of it but took the part on the recommendation of her college-age brother. He told her that BATMAN was the number one show at Harvard, (where he was attending) Julie even made her own costumes. She says: “I used to make my own costumes and know how to create that extrordinary curvey look, secerts that you learn to do. I changed the belt line. I put this flashy gold belt around my hips instead of my waist because I thought it accented the curviness.”
Julie was delighted to play Catwoman, she even bought a couple of cats to get a feel for the part. Although she loved the part, Julie was unable to do the feature film because of other commitments. Julie said she didn’t regret passing it up. She felt that the show was better on the small screen, than the big on. Julie also missed out on the thrid season of the show. She was working on a feature film and couldn’t do it. Lee Merriwether replaced Julie for the Bat-movie. Lee was a good Catwoman, but still was held at number two.
Julie also missed out on season three because of doing another feature film. She was replced this time by Eartha Kitt. The diffrence in the race was appearent between Catwoman and Batman. Kitt lacked Julie’s statuesque sexiness. The envisioning Catwoman as black was a unque to the series, an experiment that hadn’t been repeated Until 2003 when Hallie Berry won the role of Catwoman in the movie of the same name.
