When The Penguin kidnaps Commissioner Gordon's daughter Barbara, the dynamic duo make it their mission to rescue her. Pretending to be locked behind a secured door, Barbara makes her transformation into Batgirl and assists Batman and Robin in defeating the Penguin. During the episode, Alfred Pennyworth discovers her secret identity but he vows never to reveal it.
ABOUT YAVONNE CRAIG:
Batgirl was brought onto the show for a few reasons, One: Batman was going down and needed something new. So, Two: Batgirl was added to boost ratings and attract female viewers.
Batgirl was not a new concept. In the Fifties Batgirl was Batwoman’s niece, Betty Kane. The one difference in this new Batgirl was that she was Commissioner Gordon’s Daughter, Barbara. The Thirty-Year-old Yavonne Craig was hired to fill the part.
Craig remembers the first episode; “I kept my hand near the brake (of the Batgirl-cycle) in case the wall didn’t go down. Sure enough that’s what happened. I gave it full power and I looked up, and there was no wall going down. So I slammed on the brakes and went sideways, almost into the wall. The stunt coordinator was on the other side of the wall saying ‘She chickened out’ I was so angry!”
