i think the batman is a great show it is one of my favorite batman shows, but i think batman the animated series is the best animated version of batman i seen on tv yet.
I don't like the show. I watched the entire first season, and some of season 2, giving it a fari shot. Just doesn't do it for me. A lot of the voice acting is either bad or else a character matched with a voice that I feel isn't appropriate. The design of the city doesn't work for me; it just doesn't have the right "feel." The epsiodes are usually poorly written. I do like most of the character designs, though. That's about the only thing that works for me. They're not the iconic designs, but I enjoy seeing takes on the characters that aren't simply retreads of what's gone before. Overall, the show just doesn't cut it with me. I know a few people who like it, and I'm glad they get some enjoyment from it. But it's not for me.

I have not seen the entire series, but I've seen most of the first season, a lot of the second and enough of the third to have a reliable opinion.
And here is a bunch of reasons not to like it.
The voice acting is terribal, none of the actors sound like there even trying to act. Anyone in the show who isn't doing badly, isn't doing well either. And who decided the the mayor should be played by Adam West; Mayor Adam West, that sounds almost familiar, some how("And I'm a man who loves his taffy.").
The art is nothing like it should be; if you're going to base a cartoon of a comic book, make it look like a comic book. The art is way to simplistic, the characters look four feet tall, and why does every one have an indent in there face.
The character design is usually a hollow husk of what was once a great character, and everyone else is a complete perversion of the original character; The Penguin, The Joker, The Riddler, The Ventriloquist and Batgirl, all disgusting abominations.
Story; I must say it's better than Krypto the Superdog, but that's not saying much. In comparison to most Batman comic, Btas, Burton films and Begins; it's rubbish. The characters are hollow husks, that's the best way to put it. The crimes and Batman's "masterul" solutions are watered down so the children can understand them, but this makes it so easy that I'm predicting Batman's solution before he has even come up with them; and watching Batman is about either being on his level of knowledge, or him being twenty steps ahead of you, you can't be looking down on him.
So Nate, next time you say someone has no reason for hating something, maybe you should pay attention to all those flaws there mentioning; you know, the ones that give them a reason to hate it.
The one nod of respect I'm giving it is to the fluidity of the animation, it's not as sloppy as some other modern cartoons, in fact the animation is excelent; now if only they were animating an art style that looks good.

Don't forget, he did say "no good reasons to hate it." You've justified why you don't like it and provided good reasons. Drunken Fist did the same. That is truly appreciated, especially by those of us who do like the show. Even if I disagree with particular points, I still like an honest answer.
Its more the people who say "THAT SHOW SUXXORZ IF U LIK IT U SUXXORZ 2!!!!11" who obviously haven't provided any good reasons why they dislike it.

Oh... I've not encountered those people, regarding The Batman at least.
And I'm glad you're not flaming me over voicing my opinion, people have a tendancy to vastly dissagree with me... So I occasionaly get flamed.
And I apologize to Nate, I'm sorry I misread your post and acted rude.

Imitating an art style that looks good? Maybe its just me but I love Matsuda's art, and I think its nice to see something new done with these characters for once. (I especially loved Riddler's makeover)
You have your reasons for no liking the series, but the way you say it its like "this is the way it is, no other way" when your reasons are all your own personal opinions, which I can respect.
But I don't understand how someone who has said in other threads how there's no one single version of a character or characters, (specifically the Joker in regards to Heath Ledger) can also say that
"And about "being faithful to the comics", there is no such thing. The Batman franchise has lasted over sixty years and the characters have past through the hands of so many writters, so there are dozens of Batmen, Robins, Gordons, Alfreds, Penguins and Jokers"
Maybe you were only reffering to the writing when you said this? Because to me, that comment includes art as well (there is no one single way for Batman too look)
(btw not trying to be hostile or anything, just discussing)

When was the last time The Riddler wore Kiss make-up in the comics? I don't recall The Joker ever being half ape, and even Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze wore a suit instead of a giant ice cube.
Even though there have been dozens of variations, the characters still have features that make them an individual.
Imagine if Batman wore a lime green suit, no mask of any sort, had a tin foil belt, and had a chest emblem that resembles a monkey; would that be faithful to the comics? No it wouldn't, so why is it okay for the Joker to look more like Blanka than the Joker?
Now a make-over would be welcome if it didn't cast aside the character in the process, face it, they've left a lot of the peices of the characters on the drawing board.
Now about me acting like ,"this is the way it is, no other way", I'm not intending to say that on things that are a matter of oppinion, just on the things that aren't.
As far as the art style, I'm not saying that you can't like it. I'm saying that in comparison to the comic book art style which is highly detailed and realistic, The Batman's style is simplistic; The character's muscles lack definition, their bodies drawn a little to short and the faces seldom have more than just eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth.
And for the acting I'm refering to the fact that a lot of the actors are of poor quality, they seem to be reading lines and doing a voice, nothing more.
And everything I say about the story is true, I can see everything that's going to happen before it happens. And in comparison to, let's say The Long Halloween, the crimes and mysteries are very simplistic.
And I don't mean to be acting high and mighty, I'm just saying every thing as it is.
And I did mention oppinion a few times, but that was me talking from my point of view.

i love the art in The Batman. sure its different from the comics. but what comics? the comics themselves differ from each other too. u know there are The Batman Strikes comics...and they look identical with the show.
haha im just playing with u, i know what u mean. i guess ur a comic purist or something. but i love different stuff. most of my favorite villian designs are from TB. i love the joker, mr. freeze, bane, croc, they all look awesome in the show.
Just be glad they didn't base it on certain comics...LotDK #38 or #74-75 leap immediately to mind. Could you imagine a whole series made out of those styles?

Actually I'm the son of a really good artist, so I have pretty high standards for what I like detail wise.
And I happen to adore many of the comic designs (The Joker's even my favorite character of all time), so to have them fliped from an almost realistic look to complete fantasy style is a little anoying.
And it's funny that your favorite designs are the ones I dislike the most.

I think this series is very detailed for a cartoon but it might be cuz ive been watchin Timm cartoons since i was 2 or so. i like the art for the most part but there are some things here and there that i hate, like i really dislike the way the cheekbones are drawn, they look weird. and a lot of the characters are waaay too pale.
i agree with you in some points, for example i think some of the voices are just terrible and i cant stand listening to them, specially joker, hes voice is too high imo
i also think penguin needs to be stripped off the series so terribly bad. i will puke if i have to watch another penguin episode. he is VERY annoying and his voice gets on my last nerves!!
however i have to really disagree i with your analogy about batman in a green suit, its really out there. i think the batman redesigns are not too drastic with the exeption of joker. not many of the characters are unrecognizable, in fact a lot of them look the same.

I never said they were unrecognizable, I just said they lost a lot of the character in the redesigns. Let's go back to my Lime Green Batman analogy;
Batman is a creature of the night, and his almost colorless suit backs up the menacing creature look. But with the removal of the mask, and the addition of a vibrant color, he suddonly becomes just anouther superhero.
Now let's consider Mr. Freeze, his metal suit gives a cold aura to the character and the ability to see his face without seeing his eyes gives him a tragic look. But in The Batman his cold, machine like suit is toned down to a wet suit and a chunk of ice, so now he looks less cold and menacing, plus the fogging effect in front of his face costs him the ability to emote; so one of the most tragic characters from Batman's mythos becomes just anouther villian.
Oh, and the level of detail in this cartoon is far lower than that of Btas, in that they bothered to give characters unique face shapes, as well as detail lines on the cheeks, chin and forehead. Unfortuneatly the lowered there standards in Tnba, but returned to a better look for Beyond.
