ALL FLASH #1

Written by Mark Waid
Art by Various
Edited by Joan Hilty

PLOT:
The beginning of a new era for The Scarlet Speedster!

REVIEW:
Even though I watched shows like Superman and Justice League, and enjoyed the characters, there wasn't anything in me on Flash. The Flash is one of the most beloved characters, and I did know him from those shows, but there was nothing in me that was the same as everyone else. When One Year Later started, one of the new books I was getting was The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive. At that time, Bart Allen as The Scarlet Speeder, was a great new beginning for me. Unknown to everyone of us, Bart was not going to stay. For Wally and his family, disappeared in Infinite Crisis, would return. But Bart would die. Something that I hated, and pointed that out with my Justice League of America #10 review. But in JLA #10, Wally returned, and in Flash: TFMA #13 Bart died. With the previous Flash series returning, with one book coming before the relaunch, I decided this was a good time to start reviewing Flash. So here is All-Flash #1.

Despite criticism, I enjoyed all 13 issues of The Fastest Man Alive. But I knew that wouldn't be welcomed so I made sure what I felt from this was right on. This issue was great. I loved it. I heard from many hardcore Flash fans that Mark Waid was born to write the Scarlet Speedster, and they're right. While I shouldn't, really shouldn't, compare TFMA issues with this, I do say that Mark Waid does bring in more human touches with the Flash. Again, you're talking to someone who didn't read anything about Mark Waid's Flash or the Wally West Flash at all. Only TFMA and in turn the Bart Allen Flash. Keep that in mind. But this issue was great.

The issue itself deals with Wally against Inertia. It picks up where the scenes in JLA #10 where Wally and his family return, and in TFMA #13 where Bart died at the same time. Once news has spread on Bart's death, Wally hits revenge mode and hunts Inertia. This idea for this issue is not only expected, but had to happen because Wally had returned and why wouldn't he NOT chase down the person who killed whom used to be his "sidekick" of Kid Flash? I did read Infinite Crisis, so I knew that Wally in the DCU was not like Wally in the DCAU of Justice League/Unlimited (always the case). So when Wally decides to do something worse than kill Inertia, which is to immobilize him. I saw that as Wally doing what Inertia did to Bart. Whereas Bart lost his powers, so he couldn't be fast anymore, Inertia is now made into the opposite of that of his powers. And that is to be a still living, non movable, statue, almost freeze framing of him running. So Inertia could be considered in hell now, thanks to Wally.

Overall, this issue was great. People say that you shouldn't say an issue is great or rate it a 5/5 or a 10/10 unless there is a very good reason. While I won't rate this with those ratings, I found nothing wrong with this issue which is why I say it was great. Wally is back and this issue finishes off the TFMA issues, including #13, and the JLA/JSA crossover which leaded with Wally coming back with his family as well. Even though I never read Flash prior to OYL, I would expect that Wally knew his life wouldn't be the same with his toddlers. Now with Wally having kids instead of toddlers, its going to be different for him...again. The preview at the end of this issue shows us that there are plans for the future now, so everyone will be psych. So it was great.

RATING: 4/5

Next Issue: The Flash vol. 2 returns with #231!

P.S. Yes, this will be my new review title.

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.
