PLOT:
The League of Assassins tracks Black Canary to Star City in an effort to liberate the child, Sin, they believe to be the next greatest assassin. Luckily, Black Canary has other plans for Sin's abilities and future.
REVIEW:
Next to Wonder Woman, Black Canary has been another favorite character of mine. Hey, I love strong women. Even though I didn't review them, I had read Birds of Prey & Green Arrow. When Black Canary decided to take in a little girl named Sin and left the Birds of Prey in #99, people questioned what was going to happen to her. But that was completely changed when Green Arrow proposed to her in the final issue of his series. Now the question became: will she accept? That's where this mini-series comes in. Given her relationship with Ollie over the years, people are divided over her marrying him. But at least she gets a spotlight with this mini-series. Since she is one of favs next to Wodner Woman, I've decided to review this book. So here's #1!
This issue sets up the rest of the mini-series. It wasn't about the villains planning to take Sin, or attacking Black Canary and/or Green Arrow, it was really about Dinah as a superhero mother and her time with her adopted daughter Sin. Most of it was that. We also got a flashback in the early Justice League days (with Batman and his yellow oval, which is the symbol for The Batman) and told how the relationship between Dinah and Ollie got started, or kicked up into what it has been known today. That was nice to add. And this issue was good.
In this issue, we see that Dinah can talk to Sin and get a new person's view of things, such as her and her relationship with Green Arrow. This was not quite in Birds of Prey, maybe a little bit, but here is where you got Dinah and Sin talking in their adoptive mother (or guardian) to adoptive daughter roles. I like this, not because of the roles, but because we would know what Oracle & Huntress would say, and Sin offers, as I said, a new person's view. For Dinah, just like any mother (or mother to be), there are ups and downs with a child. This is no exception. As in here, Dinah was in the bathroom and Sin was being picked on that caused her to break apart the playground they were in. So Dinah as a mom is going to be both easy & hard, and have its ups and downs.
Overall, I like this issue. There have been two Black Canary series before but this is my first. I can't wait for the second issue which will come in a couple weeks. We got a look at an example of Dinah's life is with Sin and the ups and downs that come with it. But its expected, which isn't it? And the villains make their appearance: the League fo Assassins. Issue 1 got the ball rolling, and it did a good job.
RATING: 3.5/5
Next Issue: The villains make their move!

BLACK CANARY #3
Written by Tony Bedard
Art and Cover by Paulo Siqueira and Amilton Santos

PLOT:
Dinah goes all out to find her adopted daughter, and what Ollie has planned might affect her answer to him.
REVIEW:
Issue #1 set everything up, from the characters of Black Canary and Sin and their situation. And then it was issue #2 that got the ball rolling for the rest of the series. As we last left them, Dinah was played (including Green Arrow) for bringing Sin to a school where the League of Assassins took her. Plus, before that, Dinah didn't seem like she knew what she wanted. Her ex-husband came back and it also went into conflict with Ollie's proposal. But from what happened in #2, I think that'll change. Speaking of which, let's get to #3:
"Never get between a lioness and her cub." It’s a phrase that is well known because of its meaning for real life, and it's uttered in this issue. Never get between Black Canary and her adopted daughter because if you do something to her off, she'll prove her anger by really, really taking it out on you. The fights that she's in, even the threats she makes to Craig and Merlyn (the man who kidnapped Sin) prove that point. I loved the fights and I love her, even though she is second to Wonder Woman of course. So I knew that the third issue would up the ante from the first two issues, and I was right. I enjoyed this issue.
Now from everything here, it’s back to the focus of what is going on between Ollie and Dinah. Going back again to the anger Dinah shows after she learns Sin was kidnapped, Dinah fights Ollie with Ollie not even putting up a fight. At first I thought she needed some angered out but I reread it again and now I saw that that wasn't the case. What was the case was that she went nuts after Ollie told her to contact Oracle (which she still did) and the JLA. Dinah must've thought that if they let in the biggest team to help find a child, then Dinah might think that she couldn't raise nor protect a daughter on her own. That's why she fought Ollie. And that makes sense, given what was up. So that's another thing to add for the Ollie/Dinah marriage proposal.
Overall, I enjoyed this issue. Fun fights, great scenes with Black Canary, and some interesting things. The interesting things I'm referring to are what Ollie has planned for both Dinah and Sin. When this plan Ollie makes is brought up, it's described as "breaking Dinah's heart...again." Then at the end, through acting, Sin falls from the water. Now, I had to reread this also because it seemed like he killed Sin. Then, I completely realized that he must have planned something so the League of Assassins would leave Dinah and Sin alone, maybe thinking Sin was dead. Looks like we have to wait til the final issue to see if I was right. And see the answer to Ollie's question! Like you don't know what she would say.
RATING: 4/5
Next Issue: The final part of the 4-issue Black Canary mini-series!

BLACK CANARY #4
Written by Tony Bedard
Art and Cover by Paulo Siqueira and Amilton Santos

PLOT:
The mini-series concludes where the League of Assassins face Black Canary and Green Arrow, and Dinah gives Ollie her answer.
REVIEW:
So here it is the final issue to our 4-part Black Canary mini-series. Each issue has been enjoyable, even the previous issue. It had fights that were fun, great scenes with Black Canary, with the ones showing how ed she was with Sin kidnapped. But I was wondering about Ollie's plan, since it seemed that he wanted Sin dead. It seemed that way, but I knew that it couldn't be if this would lead to Dinah marrying Ollie. But let's see with the final issue.
Just like the other issues, I enjoyed this final issue. This had action as well as story to conclude what we were reading since #1. Dinah went out against those who kidnapped Sin, and she gave an answer to Ollie. It was a yes. Shocked? No? Well that's because we knew the answer with these upcoming Wedding specials. So the wedding will commence!
But there is something I must talk about: the thing about Ollie to Dinah about Sin after what happened at the end of #3. It was thought at first that Ollie was going to fake Sin's death, but then I had this feeling that he would actually let her die for real. That would be out of character for Green Arrow, so I'm glad that wasn't it. So he faked her death, which is good since it's the right way given who was after her. But there was this little concern: Dinah accepted AFTER she found out what Ollie planned and after learning Sin was alive and where she was. And after I read it the first time, it felt that Dinah acdepted too easily. I mean for a woman who has heard that she was duped into thinking her daughter died, is living somewhere else, all thanks to the man who wants to marry her, and agrees after all this. I felt that my fears after #3 came true. Maybe if this was five issues, and she accepted in #5, then it would have worked, because of time between #4 and #5. But I read it again and I had a different thought from the second read.
In the second read, Ollie did what he did because there was no other way. In the other issues, yes Ollie came off as a jerk and did hurt Dinah at times, but now he did so again but it wasn't for him this time, it was for Dinah. And from what Dinah said; I believe she was saying that before he hurt her because that was what who he was, and now he did so but to save Sin's life and to keep Dinah's idea of being a mother alive. So he did it for them, not for himself. Once I realized that in the second read, that's when I realized that Dinah accepting after all that started to make sense. Still, it happened easily. I guess that will be the only flaw I have from this.
Overall, this issue was fun and neat ending to the mini-series,. Although with the wedding specials coming up, I guess it's hasn't ended THAT much. Dinah accepting too easily is still on my mind and that will affect this rating. Still this is one flaw in a mini-series. So I'm glad we got a new Black Canary mini-series. Anyone who didn't get it, should either now or with the TPB.
RATING: 3.5/5
Next Issue: Technically there is another issue coming with the Green Arrow/Black Canary Wedding Special!

I tend to prefer the more life-like art, but this wasn't too bad. It at least fits the tone of the book. If you are on the fence, don't let the art deter you because this was a really fun book. It is rare that I come across a comic that makes me laugh as much as this one did.

Yep, although I didnt mention it, the whole Black Canary/Green Arrow thing has been really good. Green Arrow has always been one of my very favourite characters and for that reason (if nothing else) I've always liked Black Canary too. And although I didnt go too much on the art in the Wedding Special, I've just said to my girlfriend if she can sort out an outfit out like Black Canary wore, we'll get married in the morning! But she says she won't do white fishnets in public. I'll leave that one there.
art reservations aside, this is still well recommended.
