DC COMICS LAUNCHES 52THECOMIC.COM WEBSITE TYING INTO MONUMENTAL WEEKLY COMIC BOOK SERIES 52

May 8th, 2006 - DC Comics, the largest English-language publisher of comics in the world, announced today the launch of 52thecomic.com website that allows fans to enter the fictional world of 52, DC Comics' ambitious weekly, year long mini-series that chronicles the fate of a world without Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

While most comic books traditionally ship on a monthly, or even bi-monthly basis, 52 will be published by DC Comics each and every week for one year, beginning May 10, 2006. The trailblazing series plays out in "real time" with each issue covering the events in one week of the DC Universe. Throughout the course of this historic year, 52thecomic.com will grant readers access to the headlines of the Daily Planet-the workplace of acclaimed journalists Clark Kent and Lois Lane and photographer Jimmy Olson.

52thecomic.com will function as any "real world" newsmagazine would (with its headlines ripped from the pages of 52) with coverage of the events of the day, including national, world and local news, sports coverage and updated weather forecasts. If it's snowing in an issue of 52, the site will reflect that with an updated weather report. If war breaks out in Khandaq, 52thecomic.com will report on the troops. If the Gotham Knights just lost a close double-header, you can check the score. The site also features a real time clock (which syncs to the time zone of any web user who visits the site) and banner ads promoting the fictional products that stock the shelves of the DC universe.

"A landmark comic book event like 52 deserves an equally creative website," said DC Comics SVP of Sales & Marketing Stephanie Fierman. "If an imaginary universe were real, this would be its strongest news source."

Readers will also be vaulted between the panels of the year's biggest comic book event through the site's extensive collection of information, including:

? Exclusive audio interviews with writers Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid ? the super group behind 52 ? and their artistic collaborators;

? Behind-the-scenes storyboards by 52 breakdown artist and industry legend Keith Giffen;

? Online comic books and character profiles by some of the industry's top creators.

"52 is created to deliver the kind of cliffhangers, tragedies and triumphs that will drive our fans to visit their local comic book stores each and every week," said DC Senior Vice President ? Executive Editor Dan DiDio. "52thecomic.com is designed to give them a dose of that drama each and every day."

Imagine: a world without Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman-but not a world without heroes. Visit 52thecomic.com.

ABOUT 52: Four critically acclaimed writers are working together on 52, for a unique collaboration that recalls the best of television ensemble writing and plays to the distinct strengths of each comic book writer: Geoff Johns (the writer of the #1 bestselling series of 2006, Infinite Crisis) balances character development with the epic scope of the series; Grant Morrison re-imagines the genre trappings of the "mad scientist" of the 1960's and updates them for the 21st century; thriller novelist Greg Rucka brings a noir edge to the streets of Metropolis and Gotham City; and Mark Waid combines his passion for the history of DC Comics with his understanding of what makes these icons human. Together this group of writers ? like a rock n' roll super group laying down tracks for a classic album ? work with cover artist J.G. Jones, breakdown artist Keith Geffen and series editor Stephen Wacker to create an ambitious weekly series that will span from all the way from the skies of Metropolis and the streets of Gotham City to China and Australia.

52 #1 hit this week. It was a pretty cool issue, but it was largely just a bunch of set up. I thought that they were starting the History of the DCU with this issue, but I guess that will begin with #2. It was hard to see things slowing down after the fast paced Infinite Crisis issues. Everything looks like it will pan out to be a good story, but things went pretty slow in this issue.

The one cool part was how Booster Gold is managing to become a successful hero, but the twist was diminished since we know that Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are MIA.

Good issue, I'm definitely interested in seeing where this is going to go. A couple of the scenes with Ralph were kind of rough, so I'm really interested in seeing what happens next with him.

This series is turning out better then I thought. The art is nice and the ability to be sent around the different corners of the DCU is a nice aspect you normally dont get in a monthly or a monthly with delays:p title.
Week 2 built nicely off from 1 and im sure that we are going to see some interesting things come out of this. Im one of the crazies dropping $2.50 a week but im lovin every week so far.

Do you think that the Question is actually Harvey Dent ? I know in the Batman titles there was a refrence to Batman leaving Gotham in Harvey's care while he was gone but I havent seen any connection to the Question as Harvey.
I agree also about WG, but I guess we can chalk it up to grief...heck just days before his death Superboy and her had a roll in the hay.

Over at www.newsarama.com there is an article posted with some spoiler pieces and this is what is posted from 52 editor Stephen Wacker in regards to the Superboy cult...
NRAMA: Okay - another point. The Kryptonian altar in Titans Tower that Cassie is leading a service at. She built that? How did she learn so much about Kryptonian?stuff?

SW: Let's just say?Cassie's met some people.

Now this should be interesting.

It would be pretty out there is Harvey were the Question since they have been seperate characters for a long time. It really bothers me that in the OYL Batman stories Harvey is supposed to have been protecting Gotham, but there have been no signs of him in 52. We are only two weeks in though, and they haven't really shown much of Gotham.

The cult thing is pretty weird, but it will be interesting to see where it goes.

Yeah DK the Harvey/Question thing is something im waiting to see answered. Maybe Wed will offer up some more clues. One thing tho...I thought Montoya was the one who spilled the beans to Two Face that she was lesbian...so I couldnt image Harvey as the Question saying 'Who are you Montoya ?' ,since he would already know. Probably jumping ahead of myself tho. Im returning to patience mode.:p

Montoya's sexual orientation will probably not be that big a plot point for the story since that story has already been told. It is probably more along the lines that Montoya has forgotten who she is and lost herself since her partner's death.

Here is an article about the new BatWoman from www.newsarama.com
Batwoman, Kathy Kane, who, according to the article: ??is a wealthy (socialite), buxom lipstick lesbian who has a history with Renee Montoya, an ex-police detective who has a starring role in 52."

According to the article, Batwoman will "appear in costume for the first time in a July issue of 52"

in part 6 of face to face it shows harvey taking care of gotham so i dont think hes the question. also, wasnt the question one of the charlton heroes? so i dont think he could be two face.

This thread kinda died off. Am I the only one still picking up this series? There have been lots of things happen. This week Montoya saw Batwoman and figured out who she is. Never mind all the Black Adam stuff. I think that Animal Man, Adam Strange, and Starfire are going to be off of that planet in the next issue.

No, but I didn't get a chance to get to the store last week so this week had me playing catch-up. I still think it's a pretty fun read, though ther are a lot of balls in the air at this point - in addition to the stuff you mentioned, there's also the Lex Luthor/Steel story and the return of the deformed Supers story that have kind of fallen off. Not that we needed another story, but it was nice to see Clark in his more "human" role, dealing with his lack of super powers.

I actually wasn't too sure what Black Adam's deal was, not being all that familiar with the character. Fortunately, a trip to the Wiki helped out there.

It looked to me like she figured it out. That could have been me just reading too much into a couple of panels. We'll find out in a week or so.
