From a recent Crisis Councilling, Dan Dido talked about the present and future of the DCU.
This is what Dan said:
- 'Elseworlds' is officially discontinued. Currently they arent going to do anymore Elseworld stories since it draws attention away from the real main versions of the characters (the postcrisis versions). After Infinite Crisis, they are going to only focus on the one earth and its going to be a much tighter continuity.
- Birthright WILL be replaced as the official origins for Superman after IC. Instead of bring back MOS though, there will be a totally new origins story that will be more respectful to continuity than Birthright was, thus all the 'Smallville-esque' elements will be removed but the origins will still be Silver-age inspired, to draw in fans of the classic stuff.
- The 'Up up and Away' series is apparently a tie-in with Superman Returns
- Infinite Crisis was designed to be the final goodbye to all the past incarnations of the characters, from now on they will only focus on the one main earth and the characters in it. We'll never see any classic versions again.
- The 52 will be bigger than IC and feature practically every single character in the DCU. They spoiled that the end of the 52 would be revealed in the first issue and around issue 40; the context of that ending would be understood.
- Ted Kord's brutal death was designed that way to make sure fans realize that he will never, ever return.
- Robin's new costume was inspired off the The New Batman Adventures animated series (he mistakenly said Teen Titans animated series)
- They refused to comment whether Diana would continue to be Wonder Woman in the future.
From the last part, Diana has to be Wonder Woman. From those two covers, she has to be. I believe he said that to throw people off.
Anyway, those are whats gonna come after IC.
You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.
- Batman - The Dark Knight Returns
Kinda sad to see Elseworlds go. There were some great stories there. I am not huge on the idea of restricting themselves to continuity. It stifles what could be some very entertaining ideas.
It is really annoying that they can't nail down that whole Superman origin thing, but whatever changes they make will probably be undone after another 20 years anyway.
Like I heard in a recent interview with Kurt Busiek you really have to change these things up every 20 years or so. If not you run the risk of things getting stale.
