Action Cape Batman
Batman Begins, Series 1: Mattel, 2005 SKU# H1386

ACTION CAPE BATMAN IS THE BEST BATMAN ACTION FIGURES EVER MADE.

That?s quite a statement considering that there have been around 500 or so Batman action figures in all different sizes made by MEGO, Toy Biz, Kenner, Hasbro, DC Direct and Mattel over the last 25 years.

Still this large scale Batman figure is very hard to beat. Detail and Articulation and lots of it set this Cape and Cowl above all the others. While its does not have the 67 POA of the large Spider-man this figure by Toy Biz it does have just the right amount of articulation to make it look great in just about any pose. It does not have an ugly look that over articulation can sometimes bring.

SPECS:
14 ?? Tall, 24 Points Of Articulation (Head, Shoulders, Biceps, Elbows, Wrists, Waist, Hips, Thighs, Knees, Shin, Ankle, Cape). The figure has an Action Feature spreads the Cloth Cape open. The figure comes with one Batarang.

PROS:
It?s got awesome play value. Ball Joints at the head, shoulders and hips bring a new level to articulation in a Batman figure this size. The Action Cape feature is cool with a spring-loaded rod that spreads the cape open just behind the shoulders. The ends of the rod rotate so you can pose the cape swept up or back. The edges of the cape have tubing sewn into it that keeps the cape arched open. The Action Cape feature can be snapped off the figure to allow the cape to drape over the figure.

CONS:
It?s hard to imagine anything wrong with a figure this good.

OVERALL:
This is a really good buy. It?s a must have whether you?re a hardcore Batman collector or not, it?s just that good. I have nearly every Batman figure made since 1989 and I can?t recall one in my collection that compares to or is better than this figure.

The last large scale Batman figure Mattel produced (available in 3 variants, Dark Gray, Blue/Gray and Black) was basically nothing more than a double sized Zipline Batman with the same limited articulation that figure had despite being twice the size. Mattel has outdone themselves with this figure.

Here?s a size comparison between Action Cape Batman and Electro Strike Batman, left and Battle Gear Batman, right.

It looks short when it's swept up like a wing maybe, but the overall length is good for a figure this size.

YES. Well Action Cape Batman is 14? Tall. Two inches taller and far more articulated the any of the 3 previous (Gray/Black, Blue/Gray, All Black) 12? Batman and the recent DCSH 12? Batman figure Mattel put out.

As much as I love this figure, I'd rather have the variant that came out a while later with the darker, almost bronze colored belt and Batarang. It better reflected to the actual look.

No, all the pictures including the last two are of the 14? Action Cape Batman figure.
Look at the shoulders. The smaller Battle Gear Batman figure has cut shoulders. The smaller Deluxe Collector Batman figure has ball joint shoulders, but the chest extends all the out to his side like it does on cut shoulder figures.
The figure in the pictures has ball joint shoulders and has a clear shoulder socket cut into the upper torso.

Wait a sec, what about that cut across the abdomen, as well as the lack of cuts on the thighs or ball joints on the shoulders?

New Batman may have something here. It opened up a whole new mystery for me. OK, here?s the thing. I shoot each figure one at a time and I shot Battle Gear Batman and did the review before I did Action Cape Batman as I got that figure first. It?s not the Collector Edition Batman as the Bat on the chest is shiny while the rest of the suit is dull rubber, plus the cape is different. I only work on one figure at a time, so it would be odd to have put two different ones together.
I save all my pictures, both raw unedited ones along with the edited ones and of course the ones that get posted online. So I should be able to find these two photos in my files and see what other pictures are in line with them. When I searched my BYTB Database Pictures folder (765 files) these two were not there with the other Action Cape, Battle Gear Batman pictures, nor were they any place else in the folder. Which is odd because I save every picture I URL Tag in this folder.
So I checked the raw photos folder and found the originals. They are two of five different photos of the same figure taken between the Total Control BATMAN and Ras Al Ghul figures and Electro Strike BATMAN, and the figure is clearly not one of those.
You?re right about the cape as it is cut different along the bottom on the smaller figures. Caleson was right about the cut waist joint above the Utility Belt too, which makes it clearly a smaller figure, but which one? This figure has ankles, but Battle Gear doesn?t. This figure has an Electro Strike head, but the shoulders are clearly Battle Gears, which means it could only be one figure that I have.
It?s a custom I did where I put Electro Strike boots with ankles and head on a Battle Gear figure. How it got lumped in with the Action Cape pictures is beyond me, but doing these pictures at night after work usually while having a beer or two could be the culprit.
Good eyes indeed.

A sobering lesson for us all: Don't Drink & Review. I heard this one fella back in fall of 2003 wrote one for Zipline Batman, giving it a mere 2 out of 10 while under the influence. His readers blasted him for it and he almost lost his reviewing license forever.

Hehehe. Well, I'm not "hammered" when I do these things. I sort of know how this happened. I added more shots of Action Cape after I did the original shots. I did them a week later and this custom figure picture was in the batch of new ones of Action Cape.
The nice thing to see is that new people are going back and looking at all the older reviews.
Thank You
