I traded in a couple of finished games last week and got this. For anyone who's unaware, Crackdown is helmed by the guy who created the GTA series, and it's a similar experience. It's a "sandbox" game, but rather than playing a criminal, you're a superpowered cop tasked with destroying the three large gangs that are ravaging the city. The city is divided into 3 districts, and each is huge. You have access to three Agency vehicles, each of which grows more powerful as your driving skill increases. At first, you can only leap a paltry 15 feet, and only lift lampposts and such. But soon, you'll be leaping up the sides of hundred-foot skyscrapers, and throwing garbage trucks at swarms of enemies. The city grows, but rather than expanding out, as in the GTA series, it expands up. The buildings quickly get enormous, and it can be quite challenging to scale many of them. You'll want to scale these buildings to get the 2 kinds of orbs, each of which boosts your agility skill(green orbs), or a small boost to all of your skills(the blue hidden orbs). As you level up, you become truly formidable. At this point, my agility is maxed out. I'm jumping like 50 feet into the air, and outrunning sports cars on foot. It's great fun.

The game is arranged to be played in a freeform fashion. You can go straight to each gang's kingpin if you like. You'll get your ass kicked, but you can try it. The best way to go about winning is taking down each kingpin's generals. With each general you eliminate, the gang database will update you on exactly how you've damaged the overall operation, and it will recalculate the odds of you successfully taking down the kingpin. Once you eliminate the kingpin, all the remaining gang members take to the streets in a massive riot, going out in a final blaze of destruction and you mow down whatever is left. I finished taking down one of the three gangs today, and have already moved on to another district and started taking down the generals in the next one.

This game is loads of fun. It reminds me a of of the underrated Incredible Hilk: Ultimate Destruction. The graphics are very interesting; the envrionments look pretty realistic, but the characters have a very comic book-ish look to them. It's an unusual combination that works pretty well. I have only two complaints with the game: First, there aren't really any side missions or anything like that for you to do. Once you've collected all 800 orbs (500 agility, 300 hidden), you're done. There are several car and rooftop races, but they're honestly not much fun. The rooftop races are kinda cool, but they do get old pretty quick. The car races are just annoying. If you cause a lot of damage to civilians, the other Agency cops come after you, and this is pretty much a guarantee whenever you do a car race. They're just not worth the driving skill bonus you get if you win. Anyway, it's more fun, and a lot quicker, to just run and jump than it is to drive anywhere.

Second, the game doesn't have as much personality as the GTA and Scarface games. There's some really funny overheard dialogue and radio talk in GTA, and the conversations you can have with NPCs in Scarface make me laugh out loud consistently. There's just nothing like that here. There is some ambient dialogue, but it's nothing amusing. There'll almost certainly be a sequel to this game, and if they work to improve those two key areas, it's bound for instant classic status. Crackdown is easy to pick up and play, and maxing out your skills and taking out the gangs becomes an obsession. It's just over a little too quickly. I recommend it very highly for anyone who has a 360.
