Apparently, this is going to be a banner year for replicas of famous cars claiming to be the real thing (you can see the thread about the '66 Batmobile here).

The car in this case is a replica of the Ecto-1 created by Barris Kustoms and shown at the Volo museum in Illinois for the last few years (click here to see details about the sale). Although the ad is very careful to skirt around the actual words, it is strongly implied that this was a screen-used car. It wasn't. The actual Ectomobile is still rotting away in a Sony backlot.

The Barris/Volo car was never used in either film, and is actually the wrong style ambulance (the rear window is the easiest way to see the difference). Also, Steven Dane is actually the man responsible for the design - Barris is only responsible for this replica.

Hm. Says it was used in In the Heat of the Night. Are they referring to this replica or the genuine model? That's pretty silly. And they should have to state that it's a replica somewhere in the fine print.

Thanks, MacWage!

Yeah, if you listen to Barris, he's pretty much responsible for every famous car from Black Beauty (designed by Dean Jeffries) to the cars from The Fast & the Furious (built by Eddie Paul Industries). Basically, if he or anyone who ever worked for him designed a car, built a replica, owned the car, or just worked as a mechanic on something famous he now claims it as "his."

Cale, I think it's all fine print. Same with many of Barris' claims...it's technically correct that his shop built this car, and technically correct that the original Ecto-1 is one of the most famous cars ever. If you want to assume that "this car" and "the original Ecto-1" are one and the same, well...he can't be faulted for public perceptions here
