I recently got a DVD Recorder that allows me to dub VHS onto DVD and vice versa. After recording several VHS snippets onto a DVD-R (non re-writeable DVD) and popping it into the computer, it plays fine. But recording onto a DVD-RW (re-writeable DVD) and putting it in, the computer won't do squat. A disc icon briefly appears by the cursor, half-recognizing that I've put a DVD in, but it still says there's no disc. The DVD-RW plays in my various DVD players, so I know it's recorded fine. For the record, I have a Dell computer, and the DVD-RW is by Imation.
Anyone knowledgeable on this stuff? I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with my computer.
Well first there are two main formats of DVD Media ?+? and ?-?. A ?+? DVD will not play in a ?-? one and vice versa sort of. Some will some won?t. Most DVD PC drives these days are ?Dual Format? meaning they will write and play both. In addition there is also ?Double (or Dual) Layer? (what move DVD?s use). It bumps the data from 4.7GB to 8.5GB on the Disc.
So what is the DVD Media, -RW? Imation makes both ?+? and ?-? in 8X speed. They also make +R Double Layer DVD?s in 2.4X speed.
It could be you recorded a ?RW DVD and are trying to play it on a +RW drive. The other possibility is it that DVD RW?s are like CD RW?s in that they only play in some drives. Some CD-RW Discs will play fine in the PC they were burned in, but not in car or other CD Players. The same may be true for DVD-RW too, I don?t use RW?s very much so I?m not sure.

Thank you, FlaBat. The DVD-RW plays on my brother's computer just fine, but he needs some DVD ripper freeware. If anyone knows of some that's adware-free, I'd really appreciate it.
