So you're saying people who only knew about the movie a few weeks before, saw the movie, and liked it can't be considered fans?

Well . . .
There's fans
There's FANS
There are FANS!
And the are F-A-N-S!!!!

(Most of us are the last . . . )

The issue is fans or FANS that think they know the entire mythos and are F-A-N-S!!!
THAT is the group that is annoying TMMWrites enough to start this thread.

I'm with kpangilinan, I still don't see how those people aren't fans. Someone I work with loved TDK - so much so she's seen it four times - and prior to that her only exposure to Batman was watching Batman Begins on cable TV last year. In the run-up to TDK she became really excited due to the online marketing campaign for the film.

There are varying degrees of fanatics, and if someone had only watched TDK and then proclaimed themselves to be a huge fan of Batman I could understand where you're coming from, but I haven't encountered that. Anyone I've spoken to who hasn't seen any other Batman films other than TDK just seems to consider themselves a fan of that, and said they'd go to see a sequel to it,

As long as people know the very basic details of Batman such as the death of Bruce's parents, then the rest is very trivial.

They're still fans regardless. Again as I said before, not as devoted as the people here but as long as they like the character, I see no problem calling them fans.

See, I haven't encountered ANY of these expert posers. Everyone I've talked to who has no knowledge of the characters has readily admited that... I'm sure there are some people who think seeing the one movie makes them and expert, but that's such a minority it doesn't even matter.

In any case, if you know someone who thinks they know every thing about Batman, do you really need to come on here and vent like the guy has somehow wronged you?

I don't think that those people aren't fans. I mean I still considered myself a Batman fan even though my only exposure was the fact that I had seen some of the movies.

But there's always the option of people from going from just the movie fan like I was to an honest to goodness Batman fan like I am now.

Just think like that and you cannot say that they aren't fans. Even if they aren't really hardcore.

If you get that chill down your spine when you see Batman team up with the JLA you are a Batman fan, no doubts!

Not nessasarly. You really have to be into the character and not just let it be a phase through Jr. High or High school. You really have to get that tribute feeling when you see Batman save Gotham from Joker or meeting Superman or Robin.

Being a fan of something mean thoroughly enjoying it. I, for instance, used to be a fan of Star Trek TNG. Am I a treckie? Heck no. I don't know the differances between Romulans and Klingons other than the ridges and wacky hair cuts, I've never watched a single episode of the original series, and I certainly don't know the backstories of most of the characters. But I don't need all that to enjoy Star Trek TNG, I just need to watch it and say "this show is great!". That's what makes a fan.

Thats just makes you a fan of the writer basicaly. We are really all fans of Bob Kane's ideas.

So does this mean you accept that people can be casual fans of Batman?

Not extacly. People shouldnt say they like Batman if they only like the writing. They are just fans of the writter. If I said I am a fan of Star Wars I know I am not because I only like the writing of episode 3. If you just like the movies because it looks cool or you like the writing and you declare yourself a fan, thats impossible because there is so much more to be discovered about Batman other than Robin and Batgirl. What about Oral, Tim Drake, etc . What I am trying to say is you can't like something you dont know that much about, if you dont know it how can you be a fan of it? You could be a fan of the movies but you have to do some researching of the history and characters to love the whole Batman idea.

Alright that may be your opinion but by expressing how you feel about non-fans, you're making it sound as if being a Batman is the same as joining an exclusive club. It's biased and unfair for you to make a judgement like that. Just because you're a big fan of the character does NOT give you the right to decide who is a Batman fan or not.

It's all about the character. If they like him and think he's cool, why stop them from calling themselves fans?

And what's this tribute feeling you mentioned earlier? Do we have to bow our heads when the name Batman is spoken to be a fan?

The tribute feeling is where you get a chill down your spine when you see Batman team up or just one of those feelings where Batman just saved the world. Like when something big happens in TDK. I know I am taking this all too seriously but Batman was created by Bob Kane who wrote comedy strips and he had no idea that The Dark Knight would one day break world records and become the #3 movie ever. Its amazing and Bob Kane was a good man. We shouldn't just let the line drop where you become a Batman fan. We need to raise it because there are so many other heroes out there in Marvel and we need to show everybody that Batman is the #1 hero ever. This sounds like politics or religon LOL.

Not really, it makes you a fan of the characters, possibly the actors portraying them, the wrtiting of the show in the scenarios that pop up - I could keep going but it makes you a fan of the show. The same way someone can be a fan of the Batman movies without having any interest in the comics.

To be honest you're grasping at straws here. You keep saying things like 'that just makes you a fan of the writer' but have yet to explain why.

You said you're a fan of 'the writing' in Episode III. That makes no sense to me. Episode III isn't stand alone. It's the best of the prequel trilogy but 'the writing' there is completely tied into the two previous films and the trilogy that follows. If you're simply a fan of the script of Episode III, that means you didn't like anything else about the film. Which I'd find strange, as the main standout point of Episode III was the climatic battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin - as that pretty much sums up the entire six movies in one, excellent scene. And I'm pretty sure Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen had a part in that.

Bob Kane wasn't the sole creator of Batman. He was just fortunate enough to live in an era where the writer was considered the sole creator of a character.

So you don't like Batman?! Batman should be at the top of the list and to do that you have to say that to be a true Batman fan you have to honor Bob Kane's ideas. PS I was only using Star Wars as an example.
