As we all know the 79th Academy Awards were held last night and there were a lot of cheers and most of all a lot of tears. In my lifetime I have witnessed a lot of upsets and some less deserving winners. This year for example it must have been hard for the academy to choose the winners because every single one of the nominees deserved that golden statuette and each winner well deserved. For those who did not watch the academy awards head over to oscar.com for the winners.
I do believe Superman Returns was robbed for best visual effects though they should not have used the shuttle scene but the one where supes is absorbing the sunlight powerful sequence |

I was watching Simpsons and Family Guy, but I caught some bits here and there. I'm not a huge movie buff, so I didn't know about most winners. But it was cool to see Ennio Morricone win the Lifetime Achievement Award - such great composer. I missed Will Ferrell and Jack Black's song, but the silhouette performers and sound effects orchestra were pretty interesting. The piece with Spielberg, Lucas, and the other fellow was kinda funny too.

I don't usually pay attention to the Acadamy awards; these days it's all about "Who your wearing" and the awards have become nothing more than street cred.
Now the Screen Actors Guild awards, there is an honer! Having some critic say your a good actor, that's okay... Having Dustin Hoffman say your a good actor; now there's some serious street cred!
Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy!

That was Francis Ford Coppolla. That was pretty much the only part I watched. My wife said I would want to see it and it was pretty funny. Granted Lucas has only really done 3 movies (THX 1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars) so I didn't think that he had an Oscar. My wife was shocked that he didn't, though.

My favorite Oscar moments of 2007
3. Alan Arkin wins the oscar??!!!
Eddie Murphy was the shoe-in for this year's best supporting Actor
he won the golden globe and the SAG award every critiic and fan expected him to win but when Rachel Weisz opened the envelope said and the oscar goes to...everyone expected Eddie but the words out of her mouth was Alan Arkin. This shocker fortold the events to come that nothing is for sure until announced.
2. Jerry Seinfeld's oscar stand up
In 1998 when after 9 years TV's Seinfeld went off the air fans everywhere were shouting say it isnt so!! and Jerry himself dissapeared pretty much of the face of the earth until about a couple of years ago when seinfeld was released on DVD and he did all this premotional material and a TV special highlighting the memorable run and success of the show with clips stills and interviews. However it was not the same then sunday night when he presented best documentary he delivered which in my opinion the greatest act in years making fun of the each picture and how depressing all 5 were. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. This short comedy bit was in many ways the closing chapter to the legacy of "Seinfeld" in my book I will never forget it.
and last but nost least...
1. Best picture is revealed
It started with Arkin's win and anybody with scorecards can tell they did not expect him to win the first shocker of the night blew everyone's mind and set the stage for the rest of the evening. Best animated feature went to "happy feet" when any film buff can tell you the honor should have went to "Cars". Best visual effects went to "Pirates of the carribean: Dead man's chest" and not "Superman Returns" which mind blowing visuals deserved (at least in my mind) the honor. Best song went to Melissa Etheridge's "I need to wake up" for "An incoveinent truth", not any of the three "Dreamgirls" song selections which were thought to have been shoe-in's. But the biggest shocker of the night had to go for best picture with all the nominees great and well deserving films such as: "The Queen", "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" but the two everyone was talking about was "The Departed" and "Babel" with babel expecting to win. But, when Diane Keaton and Jack "the joker" Nicholson announced the winner, it wasn't Babel which was on every critic's prediction list including the great Roger Ebert but the Departed.

This was the only time when I could remember actually getting annoyed at the Oscars in my life. Usually I can't get myself to care whether a particular movie gets a nod or not, but this was just dumb. I'm glad I spent the evening watching Simpsons/Family Guy.

I totally agree - it's a complete load of old tosh. Everyone who doesnt win has to pretend they're really happy for the people who do, and the people who do have to thank god, their mum, everyone they've ever met etc.
I've truly got better things to do. |
