That was a pretty good story. The guys around here that like a "dark" Batman would probably really like the Kelley Jones artwork.

If you like that story pick up some of the issues of Batman between 515 and 552. The same art and writing team as Haunted Gotham were the regular team on the book.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the Haunted Gotham series. I wish the same creative team would revisit that world occasionally, it was very interesting and ripe with potential.
The Moench/Jones/Beatty run on Batman that DK mentions is a very good one, too. I admit, the Chuck Dixon/Graham Nolan run on Detective is my favorite from that period, but Batman was a very entertaining book too. Some of my favorites from that run:

#520: A fill-in issue with art by Eduardo Barretto. A nice little story about GCPD cop Harvey Bullock finding romance.

#523-524: A GREAT Scarecrow story. Kelley Jones is one of only a handful of artists that can actually make the Scarecrow look creepy. Most artists just draw him like a scrawny nerd with a back over his head, and that don't work.

#536: "Constant Whitewater," a tale about how Batman's lifestyle is extremele unhealthy, according to Alfred.

#530-532: The Deadman Connection, a fun little story featuring Deadman. (never would've guessed, wouldja?)

#540-541: An excellent two-parter featuring the Spectre. The pivotal scene comes when Batman must prevent the Spectre from carrying out the vengeance he has chosen. Faced with certain annihilation, the Dark Knight stands his ground against the Spirit of Vengeance.

#544-546: The Joker dabbles in the black arts, summoning the Demon Etrigan to make life hell for Batman.

The overall run is very good, but those are my favorites.

I couldnt agree more. Those are some great stories. "Constant Whitewater" really has relevance now since that is part of the reason why Batman has hired that guy at the end of Detective 818.

Another fun one was I think Detective 711.

Batman does not really appear, but Bruce Wayne prevents lots of crimes at a party.

One scene really stands out: A guy that Bruce recognizes as a con artist is trying to convince one of the rich party-goers to invest in his latest scheme. Bruce comes up and says that he was really wanting to invest in the oppurtunity. The potential victim decides not to believe the con artist because everyone knows that Bruce is horrible at investing.

I love that issue, specifically for two scenes: the one you mention, and the scene with Bruce buying a hot dog at a convenience store. It's surreal. Smile God, don't get me started on Dixon's "Detective" run, though. Those are some of the best damn comics of the '90s. I could go on for pages about them.
