WonderCon '06: Holy Terror, Batman!
Batman kicks Al Qaeda's ass. Frank Miller's talks about upcoming book.
by Hilary Goldstein
February 12, 2006 - During his WonderCon panel, Frank Miller discussed his next graphic novel. Once again, Miller returns to the world of the Batman, this time with Holy Terror, Batman!. Though the title plays with Robin's classic catchphrase, the book deals with a serious subject. Gotham has been attacked by Al Qaeda and Batman sets out to defend the city he loves. The book, which Miller has inked through 120 pages, is expected to run roughly 200 pages total.
Miller proudly announced the title of his next Batman book, which he will write, draw and ink. Holy Terror, Batman! is no joke. And Miller doesn't hold back on the true purpose of the book, calling it "a piece of propoganda," where 'Batman kicks al Qaeda's ass."
The reason for this work, Miller said, was "an explosion from my gut reaction of what's happening now." He can't stand entertainers who lack the moxie of their '40s counterparts who stood up to Hitler. Holy Terror is "a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we're up against."
It's been a long time since heroes were used in comics as pure propaganda. As Miller reminded, "Superman punched out Hitler. So did Captain America. That's one of the things they're there for."
"These are our folk heroes," Miller said. "It just seems silly to chase around the Riddler when you've got Al Qaeda out there."
Miller gave warning on our expectations over the visual style of the book. "Be afraid," he said, adding, "I think it's some of the best artwork I've ever done." Miller's career took off with Daredevil, a visual love letter to New York city. In some respects this is an artistic return to his roots. "Gotham City comes under attack, so it involves a lot more industrial landscapes than I've done in years."
"Emotionally, it's really raw," Miller explained. Imagine the powerful rage when someone crosses the "passion between a man and a woman or a man and his city. "
"The Greeks had their Gods and heroes," Miller said. "We have ours." And if you truly consider these characters our mythological figureheads, you have to wonder about their place and purpose in our culture. "What are they there for?" Miller asked, rhetorically. "Are they really going to be saving damned cats from damn trees?"

I think I might get this.. and it's true. Hilter was one of Wonder Woman's biggests foes back when she started..
However, Miller has lost his touch I think, so we'll see how good it really is...

I have difficulty believing that Miller has 120 out of 200 pages done on this when All Star Batman and Robin has to come out every 3 months or so. Then again, I may have just answered my own question. It could be interesting, but to me Miller has lost touch with what a good superhero story is.

And don't get me started on the follow-up issue.

This doesn't fit Batman very well. He's an urban technician, working to rid the streets of Gotham, not the globe, of crime. Still, I'll most likely pick up the first issue, because I'm dumb.
I can see it now:
"I'm going to bomb Bin Laden. I'm going to bomb Bin Laden. I'm going to bomb Bin Laden..."

Frank's been working on this one for at least 2 years, in between his various other projects. It's been mentioned on and off during that time. I'll get it, for sure. I enjoy Frank's stuff even when it's not that good. Like with All* Batman, it's an interpretation of the character I don't like, but Frank loves it, and his enthusiasm carries through in the work. Not even the occasionally bad dialogue and endless splash pages bug me. for some reason, I love the fact that Frank has the stones to do what he thinks is right with the characters, even though pretty much everybody else hates it. That's just how Frank is, the prahse "half-assed" is not in his vocaublary. When he does something, he goes all-out. Somehow, this lets me enjoy his stuff even when it's bad. It's weird, but that's just how it is.

I don't know about this guys, I mean the war on terror isn't as black and white as World War 2 was. I think Miller's just asking for trouble with this book.
And yes, I definitely agree that Miller's more recent stuff has been a bit tame, but I generally think Miller is only right for Batman in small doses. He makes Batman out to be this sick, schizophrenic and doesn't even bother explaining why Batman doesn't kill. A bit like Tim Burton, actually.

not a big fan of millers all star b&r but i still might chekc this out given the content. i am a bit unsure of the content itself tho, i dont know if bringing this much of reality into comics is necessary or even a good idea, but ill reserve real judgment until i actually see/read some of it at least.

I have to say, Miller's obsession with making his characters as "bad ass" as possible does get very annoying. Sin City's Marv has one of the most stereotypically "bad ass" looks in comic books. It just makes it hard for me to get interested in looking into the story. I'm sure one of his philosophies is that it doesn't matter who you are, killing cops is always incredibly bad ass. Even if the character has been fighting crime for two years and wants to make friends with the commissioner.

lol i agree 100% miller may depict a bad ass batman but he goes overboard and ends up losing everything that makes the batman who he is. batman wouldnt go around torching cops with the batmobile. look at year one, excellent story but that too has one big mistake. when batmans in the burning building and he punches a cop through a brick wall....now...batmans a smart guy...really smart....im sure hes capable of knowing man + brick wall= internal bleeding, broken bones and the possibilty of death. i think he makes batman too extreme which is why i dont like too much of his stuff.

ok sure. dkr and dk2 were good. not great, good. but now miller is doing crap with sin city and b&r. he'd have to make a amazing comeback.
also i dislike his art. the only reason i got b&r #2 was for jim lees art. im not into wildcats so i havent seen his new stuff for a while.

Batman killing cops? Okay...if you're going to do that then why are you fighting crime in the first place?
The book sounds pretty...uncool to me. I guess I can kind of agree with him about wanting people to know what we're up against though. Whoa...did I just say I agreed with Frank Miller about something?
I really really disgust the way he writes Batman. And the way he draws him (in DKR at least).
All Star Batman and Robin sounded cool to me when I first heard about it, because I really like Jim Lee's art, but when I heard how Frank Miller was writing it...I'm passing on the title.
