The Substitutes
PLOT:
It's that time of year again -- Legion Auditions! This year's crop is hardly promising, with most hopefuls turning out to be comic duds. But when the Legion is overwhelmed fighting a mysterious foe in Earth's upper atmosphere, a group of rejects takes it upon themselves to save the world below... with outrageous results.
REVIEW:
When I saw and read through the episode titles and what was known (at that time), I saw the title of "The Substitutes". Know I knew what it was referring to as it was about the Legion of Substitute Heroes. But like many, I didn't know much about them beyond the title. This is where this episode comes in.
The episode starts out when one person, who are auditioning, shows his "superpower" as he creates a huge plant-like monster, whom he can not control after he creates it. With the help of Bouncing Boy, its defeated. The next one is Stone Boy, who turns into stone but looks like he can't go back (for a while), and then after two others, Matter-Eater Lad appears and eats a bomb followed by Star Boy and another auditioner. In the end, Star Boy & Matter-Eater Lad are the newest Legion members. Whiel the LoSH are away, the rejects decide to show them what they can do. While fighting a monster, whom Star Boy makes heavier and Matter-Eater Lad eats, an army of the same speices attacks. Back home, the rejects try to do some good, if mixed results. Then a rejected villian, Star Finger, appears and the team fights him, poorly.
This episode picks up where Lightnign Storm left off. In that episode the auditions were being prepared and some were seen. In this episode, the auitions happens and are concluded. This episode was told by Legion producer James Tucker to be based on frok the cues of an Substitutes annual by Keith Giffen. Since my only knownledge of Legion comes from what I want to know, and from their media versions such as this show and their appearences in the DCAU, I neve read that annual (of course).
The Substitutes really are bizarre. Some of them were even cameoed in "Champions". One of them was Matter-Eater Lad, which is known as "Kem the Bismollian" (or "Camden Mismullion", according to the closed captioning). But at least Matter-Eater Lad appears with the Legion. The Substitutes have bizarre powers that either they can't control or don't know how to use them. Then again, both are the same thing. The whole thing about this episode was what Bouncing Boy said "to keep trying and then someday you'll get to where ou want to be". And thats what these rejects did. And in the end of it all, they stopped their villian and helped the LoSH with their space menace. There is when the Legion of Substitute Heroes are born.
Overall, this episode had funny moments, yet in my opinion I think there should've been more. The Substitutes were a learning lesson plotline while the LoSH had a more serious plotline. But I felt throughout the episode that maybe this storylien could've been about the LoSH are in trouble and their only option is a team of rejects to help them. That would've been better as the same themes would still work and the comedy would increase than in this episode. So as you can tell, this episode wasn't that good. It may be a fan favorite to many fans of the comic, but I didn't get that. It did have funny moments, but maybe a second viewing would help. But thats 50/50.
RATING: 6.5/10
