THE FLASH #231

Written by Mark Waid
Art by Daniel Acuña
Covers by Doug Braithwaite and Acuña
Edited by Joan Hilty

PLOT:
Mark Waid starts his writing in the return of the second Flash series with Wally West and his new life as a family man.

REVIEW:
After All Flash, I was ready to review The Flash as a new series added to my review list. As I said before with All Flash and even before that with the final part of the JLA/JSA team-up: I hated the fact that DC killed off Bart Allen just because no one liked him as the Flash. I have no beef with anyone who is or has been the Flash, but Bart's death was like Jason Todd's. Both died because no one liked them. Wouldn't it at best to just fix them so they can likeable than killing them? I don't want to get into that again. But anyway, now with the second volume of Flash back, and now as a new series in my review list, here is Flash #231:

This was a good character-focus issue that had a bit of action in the beginning, followed by some comedy. The point of this issue was that it's about Wally and about his new point in his life as a family man, but in a much harder time with his kids as superpowers. By the way, that scene with Wally changing diapers at super-speed was priceless. Anyway, the kids were like kids, which isn't something to mention but you have to let that be known so it wouldn't seem like the kids wouldn't be kids. But there was great interaction between brother and sister. The sister, Wally and Linda's daughter, is Iris (a bit of Kingdom Come there) but the brother, the son's, name wasn't told. And as in the case of these types of issues, the bad guys appear at the end. So in the end, this was a good issue.

But one of the things I notice was that Bart Allen wasn't mentioned. This isn't another "back to why he died" thing, but it seemed like Bart never existed. I ended up thinking "great, now did not mention him so they didn't have to deal with what they did anymore?" And that's how I felt, but then as always, I tried to find some sense. There are three theories that I have: one is that the notion that "miracles haven't happened in a year" refers to what it was like before Bart was Flash, because he died the same time Wally was back. Second is that this is just a typo, or something relating to the use of that notion that was wrong. Third is a simple "just ignore it". I guess it's either one or three, but let's face it; I didn't care, it didn't bother me. Might as well move on.

Overall, this issue was a character focus issue on Wally about his new life as a family man and the kids. So as that kind of issue and story, it was a good one. The kids were handled well, and I want to see where they go from here. And again, the notion of the "miracles not here or a year" didn't bother me. Just ignore it and move on.

RATING: 3.5/5

Next Issue: What alien menace lies beneath the Flash's own home?

Not bad Nate, but they did mention the boys name.

Jai

It was mentioned in both this issue and when he introduced the kids to the League in the "Lightning Sega."

D'oh!

Actually I saw that and figured it wasn't him.

THE FLASH #232

Written by Mark Waid
Art & Cover by Daniel Acuña
Edited by Joan Hilty

PLOT:
What alien menace lies beneath the Flash's own home? And what's his dark, dark family secret — the one that's helping him keep the peace in Keystone?

REVIEW:
Okay, first things first: in my review for #231, I mention that I didn't know Wally's son's name. That turned out to be wrong when someone pointed that it was Jai in #231 and in the JLA/JSA "Lightning Saga" arc. So I made a mistake. NOw on that previous issue, it was a character focus issue on Wally about his new life as a family man and the kids. So it was a good one, as the kids were handled well, and I wanted to see where they go from there. So with that done, here is #232.

I have since enjoyed Waid's run on the relaunched Flash series, and this issue has no exceptions. Wally was always a family man wanting to happen and it works. Jai and Iris were handled great, so were Wally (of course) and Linda. The only thing though was that unlike the previous issue, I didn't get the sense of, not alot, but not enough of things happening here like there were in #231. I mean the kids get screen time, to which I have no problem with, and Wally freezes the water to buy time against the monsters. It would seem that maybe more could've been added but it was still okay. Another thing about this issue was the scene with Wally making the weapon had a '50s/Silver Age vibe in me. Like how in those old comics, anything a superhero did have that "wow" factor everything time. I got that here, for some reason.

Overall, in short, it was an okay issue. It was set up, which is not bad but it does bring up if more could have been added in. I'm really more interested in the next issue though. So see you then!

RATING: 3/5

Next Issue: JLA is here, to take away Wally's kids!

That's bad when you like a character & wanna read something - and the art turns you off.

Aquaman 50 (from and up to latest) was a bit like that for me. I'm still there because I like the character so much - but that tested me. I've kinda got used to it now though.
