JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #8

Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Fernando Pasarin
Cover by Alex Ross
Variant cover by Dale Eaglesham and Ruy Jose
Edited by Michael Siglain

PLOT:
The spotlight turns to Liberty Belle as the All-American powerhouse races to stop the Justice Society's troubled young recruit, Damage, from making the worst mistake of his life.

REVIEW:
Last issue was centered around new recruit; Citizen Steel. Character-focused, it showed a man whom, like other superheroes, found himself in the middle of the superhero community that wasn't in his plans. Plus, we also got to see a lunch conversation between Superman and Starman, which was fun. But that was the Citizen Steel-focused issue. Now, it's time for Liberty Belle!

Liberty Belle has become one of my favorite JSA characters. Her spotlight issue here does, for me, shed light on who she is and why she is who she is. If you ever wanted proff that the JSA was a family, Liberty Belle would be your answer. I'm liking these character spotlight issues, probably because it helps any reader who doesn't know a character, know him or her. So this issue was done well and I enjoyed it.

If I had to pick something to talk about, it would be Liberty Belle's talk to Damage. Damage's face is disfigured, and Liberty Belle knows that and has seen his face. But while Damage believes that she must've laughed afterwards, she tells him that she didn't and never will. Because of what we saw in the flashback sequences, Liberty Belle says her life isn't perfect, and no one's is and she knows it. The idea Damage feels is what many kids feel growing up when they feel ugly and I feel that others laugh at them in secret, I know I did. But Liberty Belle knows her life and anyone else's lives aren't perfect, and cares for Damage as friends do. More reason why I like her, and why the JSA is what Batmans aid it was in the first page of #1: a family.

Overall, I liked this issue and because of it I like Liberty Belle. Maybe that sounded like I hated her before this, and that's not true. I liked her because she was cute and funny, but didn't know anything else about her. That has changed. As I said, I like these spotlight issues and I think there should be more for readers who don't know some, or maybe all, of the characters in the team. I know there are some that fit that.

RATING: 3.5/5

Next Issue: The prologue to a JSA storyline that will be talked about, when a new superhero joins the ranks of the JSA!

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.
