Clayface
The Batman EXP, Mattel, 2006 SKU# J1915

There have been at least 6 other Clayface?s before. Basil Karlo, Matt Hagen (perhaps the best known), Preston Payne, Sondra Fuller, Cassius "Clay" Payne (son of Payne and Fuller) and Claything. There was also ?The Mudpack? which was a group consisting of Clayface's Karlo, Hagen, Payne, and Fuller.

In The Batman, Clayface is now Detective Ethan Bennett, a GCPD Detective, and Bruce Wayne's friend from high school. Clayface first appears in the two-part episodes "The Rubber Face of Comedy/The Clay Face of Tragedy." Bennett inhales a dose of Joker's Joker Putty. The Joker Putty turns his entire body to a clay like substance, giving him the ability to take any form, any voice and mold any shape into his hands. Clayface is voiced by Steve Harris.

This Clayface figure is more claylike than his predecessors. The body is a solid gray plastic while the right arm is soft rubber. The right arm is also spring loaded.

SPECS:

The figure stands 6 3/4 inches tall and has 5 points of articulation (head, shoulders, hips) and a rubber spring loaded right arm.

(the left arm in action)

PROS:

It is a decent figure, with a cool action feature. The large splats for feet will keep it upright all the time, for display. The spring loaded rubber arm is a real nice touch too. It can be ratcheted around (clockwise) to start in almost any position. The wind it up (counter clockwise) a couple times and let it rip. Although why stop with one, both arms of rubber would have been even cooler.

CONS:

The articulation is otherwise very limited. The left arm looks like a ball joint shoulder, but it?s not, although it should have been. The large left hand should have had finger joints to close it into a fist. Even better, interchangeable hands would have been really nice, as he comes with no accessories.

OVERALL:

Once again another cool villain even though it is somewhat plain looking, although because Clayface was Ethan Bennett, I doubt we?ll ever see an Ethan Bennett figure. I think it has the best action feature of any of The Batman villain figures so far. It has pretty good play value, so I think the kids will like playing with it.

While they make plenty of Joker?s, there have only been a two other Clayface figures (sculpts) that I have in my collection. The BTAS version is perhaps the best known, and it was repainted twice for two different box sets (anyone care to guess the set names *) and LODK had an Intenet Exclusive with an odd rotating head with 3 faces on it. So maybe you should consider adding Clayface to your collection instead of another Joker figure.

* Extra Credit: beside a different body color, something else was different about one of the Clayface repaints, what was it?

That's a nice figure. I'd like to get my hands on that.

Yeah, me too. I think it's the best looking villain figure so far from the series (except maybe Catwoman).
