haha dude, bob kane wasn't even the brains of the character that we know. he made the design, and the fact that he was a non powered super hero. i give most props to denny oneil. i think he's the man who actually created the dark knight that i've come to like.

You are right. Denny Oneil is really a legend.

Bob was the original artist AND writer, with his partner brought in soon after the first publication. The first one was a success and they wanted the stories far more frequently, so he asked a friend to help him with the work volume and speed production.
Bob remained "in charge" of the character for a good while after further writers and artists joined to make all the comics they needed to create (more work than 2 guys could do).
And the character elements developed over time and for various means. For example, the cave was created for the Serials. It made so much sense, that it was quickly adopted. Each of the incarnations (periods in Batman writing/art/stories) had artists and writers that worked together to make the character relevant for the contemporary popular media/storytelling. In the 1950s, Batman was light and sci-fi. He went dark after the 1960s show.
In fact, the dark version was closer to Bob's original concept.
Oh, the gun-armed Batman . . .
In the late 1930s EVERYONE in real and fictional crime drama bore guns. It only made sense and was what was expected. Also, the killing of bad guys was also expected. Dick Tracy eliminated most of his rogues gallery.
It was the creation of the Joker that stopped that idea. Bob wanted to keep his more interesting villains alive for future stories.
Also, the PRECISE character of today became fully developed under Denny in the 1980s and 90s, when he was "in charge" of the Batman books and stories. So, the present version bears his mark very strongly.
However, Bob Kane DID create Batman.
The 2-disk "Batman: Gotham Knight" has a great documentary on Bob Kane and the development of the Batman character.

Bob Kane was the original artist, but Bill Finger was the original writer. Finger made Batman a detective, he gave him the cowl, the cape, the city, the name Bruce Wayne, he also made Gordon and half the other supporting characters... Kane gets all the credit because he has legal rights to the character, but the reality is Finger did half the work.

Going back to the earlier posts, I don't really mind people calling themselves Batman fans who have only seen him in the movies. Now if they declare something like "I'm Batman!" or "I'm the biggest Batman fan!" then yeah, I'll admit I'd get a little upset.
One thing that has somewhat "grinded my gears" is how when I was 11, 12 or 13 years old, people used to make me feel stupid for liking Batman. Now, it's cool for everyone to like Batman. It's kinda like "What the heck?! Where were you guys when I was feeling like the only person in the world who likes Batman?"
But in the end, I'm glad the new movie and Batman in general is getting so popular. We're living in a truly great chapter of the history of Batman. |

I have to chime in here and put in my 2 cents. You do not have to know every single detail about Batman or Bruce Wayne to be a Hardcore Fan!
I don't need to know what type of Toilet Paper he uses or who is his favorite band or what type of pop he drinks.
I can honestly say I am a huge Batman fan. And although I have in the past and growing up bought and read Batman/related Comic Books, I do not own or read any now! Just because, I enjoy watching his Movies and Cartoons more!
Think what you like- But, I have not ever and don't plain on ever watching Batman Begins or The Dark Knight movies. They just don't Impress me! Now, lets hear all the B.S. "well your not a fan then" WTF?
I faithfully watched the Super Friends, Batman The Animated Series,
Justice League Unlimited, The Batman and Batman Beyond.
I've seen the movies Batman the Movie (1966), Batman, Batman Returns a million times and know every word. I even know all the words to
Batman & Robin and Batman Forever and to me those 2 movies where a freakin' joke.
I owned about 85% of the Super Powers Collection growing up! I took them everywhere I went. I still have a picture of me holding the Penguin, Superman and Batman in church when I was just a little tike. I took those suckers everywhere!!!! One of my all time favorite toys growing up was the Kenner Dark Knight-Bruce Wayne action figure. Which I got for Christmas as a kid- I can still remember just sitting there staring at the package in all its glory under the Tree!
That figure was so Awesome, he came with his gloves and hood you could either keep on or take off! I currently collect the DCUC line! Because thats my Favorite Batman era look (the Yellow, Blue and Grey)
I loved all the animated movies
The Batman vs Dracula, Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, Batman Beyond: the Movie, Batman & Mr Freeze SubZero,
The Batman Superman Movie and
Batman Mask of the Phantasm!
I used to be a Prick too and think when people would talk about MOTU with me! That they didn't know half as much as me- *(What how can you say you are a fan of Masters of the Universe when you don't even know that He-Ro is the Son of He-Man? Or about pre-Eternia, or that the Sorceress is Tela's mom or who Keldor is? )*
But, since then I have grew up and realized that there are all times of fans.
A fan is someone who is an enthusiastic supporter of someone or something!
They like the characters and they may follow the shows or movies or spend all their extra money buying any or everything with that Character, that they feel deeply for!
You don't have to know what all makes up the Batsuit or everything that is on his utility belt. To like, Love, or follow Batman or any other Character out there! INDEED!!!!

I see. The only thing I've actually learned from this thread is that Batman fans apparently have to meet your criteria for being one. Your response to my comments on what you said was merely to imply I don't like Batman. What's the point in you creating a discussion when you're not able or willing to actually discuss anything? |

Guys, let's keep this civil... no more misrepresenting other's posts, and no insults.

OK - on a serious note, I kind of know where TMMW is coming from, but in my heart of hearts I can't agree.
I've a whole house full of books and comics, I buy all the DVDs, I've got loads of action figures, loads of Batmobiles, I'm involved in a Batman Website and there's a good chance if you know me and see me out and about I've got well cool Batman T-shirt on. Now does that make me a bigger fan than someone who has just seen TDK and loved it? Probably yes. But what's to say that person won't go on to become like me or anyone else here?
It's snobbery to suggest that person can't be a Batman fan because they're new to him - but I can be very precious about Batman; and as much as I'd love to tell you otherwise, sometimes I can be a bit of a snob too.

If TMMW feels I insulted him then I apologise as it wasn't my intention. I can understand where he's coming from. Nobody likes it if they're a fan of something and others who aren't proclaim they are.
Throughout the thread I've merely wanted - along with others it seems - to point out to him you don't have to be a diehard fan in order to be a fan. 'Fan' is short for 'fanatic', and as such it will always vary how fanatical someone is about something they like.
So yeah - if I've insulted TMMW, which I honestly had never intended to, I hope he reads this and realises it wasn't my intention. |

Like I say (implied?) earlier, there are many levels of "fans." The most basic level may develop into something deeper or pass as quickly as it arrived.
I think I am an overly serious fan, THEN I come on here . . .
I realize, I am barely in the running!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were insulting him!
That warning was because phalsephace made a comment that TMMWrites may have taken as an insult and Iwanted to intervene before things escalated.

Wow three pages. I think I've gotten all fuzzy from reading this... or maybe it was that guy in the cape who slammed my head on my desk.
Anyway, I understand where everyone is coming from. I've been a pretty casual fan of a lot of things. I would watch a couple of shows or buy a few toys, but I don't really have the ego to go around saying things like I am an authority and not really knowing what I am talking about. This happens everyday with all kinds of things, If you're not out there get used to it because it will happen at work too.
Perception is everything today. People will sometimes let themselves believe whatever someone says no matter no wrong it may be if they sound confident enough about it. We have managed to create this society where people can easily be perceived as authorities on a subject because they have charisma or just a lot of stubbornness.
How many of you have come across someone like this: CLICK ME
Dark Knight has propelled Batman popularity to a height that rivals any other era. As with anything there are many many fair weather fans. Should we tell people that if they are not immersed in the Batman mythos they are not fans? Probably not. I think that we should try to get them into the other forms of media and help them become more interested. If you liked Dark Knight, you really ought to watch Gotham Knight or read Strange Apparitions.
We should be thankful for the fair weather fan. They are the ones that have kept Batman going for nearly 70 years. The money (which is what it all comes down to) value of the character is what has kept the one constant, the comic, from being cancelled. I don't know how many times I have heard that Warners is essentially keeping DC around for use in other media. Everytime that guy who thinks that Heath Ledger played Jack Napier a little too young goes to see Dark Knight, buys a t-shirt, or buys an action figure, he is keeping the character alive... and for that I say thank you.
