This post could really go anywhere, because I'm going to touch base on Toons, Movies, Toys, and TV.
Now, for awhile we've all have said, Whats up DC? But really, what is up? DC has some of the finest characters around. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman Green Lantern, Green Arrow to name a few. But it seems that DC is getting their butt kicked by Marvel. Why? Lets look at therse one by one...
Toys -
Go to Wal-Mart, the Action figure asle, what do you see? Marvel. Over half of the asle is Marvel, Spiderman, Fantasic Four, Ghost Rider, Marvel Legends, And I think I saw X-Men. What does DC have? Well.. what are they SUPOSE to have? If you can find them, you'll see DC Superheroes, 1 row. Man Of Steel (alot of ugly repaints from the Returns line, and a few pegs of The Batman, and MAYBE JLU. Well, looking at the titles, they are pretty evenly matched. Cept for the fact that MArvel is always stocked. Is this because DC outsells Marvel? Now, it's because Hasbro learned from their mistakes with the Batman line and have now gain Marvel and wow, are they kicking butt. The figures look better, and sell better. The main reason you can't find any DC figures, they are short packed. End of story.
Winner = Marvel
Toons:
There have been alot of Cartoons from both sides.I won't go into all of em, but in recent years, I'd say that they are almost tied, with DC maybe pulling ahead because of Batman: TAS.
Winner = Tied
Movies - Live Action
DC:
Superman - 5 Films
Batman - 5 films
(these do not count the serials and the 60's movies)
Catwoman
Steel
WOW, out of ALL of the DC characters they chose to do Catwoman and Steel...
Marvel:
X-Men - 3 films
Spiderman - 3 films
Fantasic Four - 2 films
Dare Devil
Elektra
Ghost Rider
Hulk
Iron Man (soon)
Hellboy (soon to be 2 films)
The Punisher
Captain America
I'm not counting rumors, so..
Winner = Marvel
Animated Movies -
This one kinda has two section in itself.. You have the animated like BTAS, and the new animated films. So lets leave movies like Return of The Joker in the Toon section and focus on the animated movies coming out.
DC:
Superman/Doomsday (Soon)
Marvel:
The Avengers (2 films)
Iron Man
Winner = Marvel
Now this can be argued.. but wait, DC is coming out with New Frontier, and Teen Titans.. yea, ok, and will that put them ahead? no.
TV -
Clearly, DC has this one..
Superman
Batman
Shazam
Flash
Superboy
Smallville
Bird Of Prey
Marvel -
Spiderman
Hulk
Marvel had a couple of TV Movies with Captain America and the Hulk but still, clearly..
Winner = DC (YAY! We won!!)
As for comics.. I say they are about even..
So.. what does this tell us. We're with the WRONG company. LOL.
But seriously.. I do feel that DC is screwed. Warner Brothers is not doing them right. Why does the Marvel movies do ok? Well, they are not with only One studio, Sony, Fox, Columbia, they all get to do the movies, where as WB is the only one to make DC films
Figures.. DC has messed up by having DC Direct and not letting Mattel make the figures they want.. though that's not ecuse for the poor sculpts and figures.
So what can we do? Not a thing. They listened to us on Batman, you'd think they hear us on everything else. But, sadly.. they don't.
Now, all this is my opinin, and I'll more than likley add more later..

you could add the dark knight to DC because thats in production like some of the marvel movies ou listed. the main problem with the toys (besides mattel only having two characters) is DCD is not at retail. neither is marvel select, but they got legends. if mattel really wanted to make DCU comic figures, they could say they are 6" JLU. they wouldnt be able to do many supporting characters, though. |

Good lord Beyond. This one will run!
Who do I like best, DC. No question.
Obviously the following is my own opinion, and doesn’t necessarily reflect the views of Bob Kane, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby or Frank Miller.
FILMS;
Batman Begins is the best comic film ever. Period. If anyone doesn’t agree then I’d respectfully suggest they go and watch it again. I can only speak personally; aside from the X-Men trilogy (which were brilliant), I’ve got little time for any of the Marvel films (and I include both the first couple of Spidey films in that). The Fantastic Four film was particularly unspectacular. Most recently, I thought Ghost Rider was only just about ok. Naturally I’m a fan of Burton’s films, and I’m very precious about Christopher Reeves Superman.
So for films, I’d vote DC.
CARTOONS;
I don’t agree with you at all here Beyond. DC doesn’t just pip Marvel, it kills ‘em! Timm & Dini’s BTAS, STAS, BB, JL & JLU are the reason. It was BTAS that got me back into Batman after about a decade away, and (alongside Doctor Who & Dad’s Army), it’s my favourite ever TV program. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of Marvel toons that I’m a massive fan of (most notably the mid 90s Spidey – the definitive piece of Marvel outside of actual comics), and I like the Marvel animated films, but by a mile….
DC wins this one.
TOYS;
I’d give this one to Marvel. Batman & DC have had their moments (in fact quite a few) but Marvel’s action figures and stuff are numerous and impressive.
MARVEL. Not by a lot, but Marvel nonetheless.
TV;
It was the 60s TV show (albeit 70s repeats of) that actually got me hooked on Batman in the first place, and despite the fact it’s a world away from Bob Kane’s original vision – I’ll always adore it. Prior to that, I’m a big fan of golden age TV/radio, and George Reeves Superman was just fantastic. I’ve not seen a version of Superman on TV I don’t like. Wonder Woman was straight from the same jar as the 60s Batman show, but again, I love it. I can’t not mention the Hulk TV show here, but still by a mile –
DC for me.
So there you have my take on it. 3-1 to DC.
If you wanted to add comics to that (!?), I'd make that 4-1.
I don't want to give the impression I don't like Marvel, because believe me, I do. But if I had to give up one or the other, it's a no-brainer (and thats despite SpiderMan!).

Yea.. by looking at it your way RDK, I can see your point. But I'm not really talking about which films are better, because hands down, Begins is the best, follwed by Superman the movie, then Spidey 2, 1 and so fourth.
I'm talking about quanity and why tghe freak DC only has basically two Superheroes instead of ten..

OK, see what you mean.....
I think DC's got 2 heroes and Marvel have a dozen because in the main; Siegel, Shuster, Kane & Finger were on the scene and established 25 years before Lee, Ditko & Kirby really got going. It's totally hypothetical, but I think the timing of it is important. Marvel were playing catch up and they just went for it (creating a range of characters that is mightily impressive). The impact/legacy of that is still with us today (from the toy racks at Woolworths/Walmart to the number of films they've made compared to DC). Maybe If the 2 universes had begun life at the same time, things would've levelled out more (?). I guess we'll never know.
Superman & Batman are a bit like Elvis and The Beatles - they were the first & the best. No-one should ever really be able to compete, but Marvel really gave it a go. It's to their immense credit that you'd have to say Spiderman is at least a (very) serious alternative DCs big hitters (maybe Spidey is the Rolling Stones?).
I remember a thread round about Xmas time Beyond, you said yourself that Marvel wiped the floor with DC in the marketing stakes - thats a big part of it too!

Oddly enough, I've been thinking about this some lately as well. I was trying to think about what makes the companies fundamentally different, and I think you've basically hit the nail on the head. Marvel is simply more marketable.
Consider it like this: the Marvel characters are generally all ad campaigns to begin with. Spider Man, The Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Captain America...all vastly different looking, brightly colored characters that are just begging to be made into action figures and CGI-laden movies. Now consider the DC characters...Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman...they're all basically humans wearing different outfits. Which one is going to be an easier sell to Joe Moviegoer?
I consider it akin to the difference between HG Wells and George Lucas. Sure, they both wrote science fiction, and neither one is bad, per se...but one tends toward literary classics while the other tends towards commercial success (not that there isn't some overlapping, I'm just speaking broadly).

I wouldn't really consider Marvel more marketable because they are more colorful, it's becasue Marvel isn't holding back. I mean, as for toys, we can't get certain theme figures, or for that matter, certain figures, Shazam is a good example, there are legel rights that won't allow anyone but DC Direct to make this figure.
Mattel isn't allowed to make anything but Batman/Superman.
There are to many restriants. Bruce WAyne can't be on Smallville becasue of the movies, Robin can't be on The Batman because he was on Teen Titans. Aquaman couldn't be on the last season on JLU because they were making a LIVE action tv show.
The main point is the fact there is WAY to many involed. Warner Home Video, Warner Animation, Warner Movies, Dc Comics, ect..
If it was plain DC Comics, with no WB, I think we'd be better off.

First of all hellboy is not marvel or affiliated with marvel in any way and the only films to be successful for marvel were spider-man and x-men. daredevil hulk and ghost rider had moderate success and the rest bombed big time and are more or less forgetable
DC also had some other comic films like Constantine which is the mature vertigo which is a division of DC comics and superman the first two and returns were great films (returns from a certian point of view) superman the movie defined the comic book film and gave the characters humanization no longer were they just two demensional characters superman was also the first "modern" comic book movie which did away with the campiness and really took the character seriously but still had fun with it. Superman was also Number 1 at the box office for over 18 weeks astonishing at the time and was the highest grossing film in warnerbros. history in 78 almost every one in the world has seen it and either loved it or just liked it I've never come across a fan who said that they hated this masterpiece x-men and the first spider-man have eachhad mixed reviews from fans and critics alike
As for TV marvel put together the X-men show as a proposed pilot that never took off due to poor screening tests and only picked the idea up again after it was announced that WB was doing an animated program of Batman that went back to the characters dark detective roots so if it was not for Batman TAS there would not have been X-men or the marvel action hour with Fantastic Four and Iron Man or Spider-man and unlike marvel which tried to accerately retell the stories from the actual comics but with a little tweaking such as X-men's Phoenix/Dark Phoenix saga with the 90's costumes and team and the Venom saga which had no secret wars to introduce the symbiote but a shuttle crash which had bonded to spidey at that point DC on the other hand updated and gave new origins to their characters and told their own stories (no Knightfall or Death in the family storylines used here) which worked out well and could have been used in the comics as an alternate earththe only original project marvel did was "Spider-man and his amazing friends". there is no tie DC all the way for animation
I have no arguement for toys marvel has a wide selection and doesnt shortpack as mattel with the DC superheroes and JLU line also until recently DC has been at loss of articulation and DC Direct has fine products like the Batsignal and kryptonite prop (have both) but are a little overpriced especially the action figures 15 bucks for crisis batman he only has a display base that's 9.99 tops |

First, Hellboy is a Dark Horse property.
Second, while Marvel has the quantity card; it's quality we should look at.
Movies:
On DC's side, we've got Superman 1, 2, and Returns and Batman, Returns, and Begins; +6 points.
Forever is kind of iffy. no points for this one.
As for DC's failures... Superman 3 and 4 were bad. Everyone hates Batman & Robin. as for Catwoman and Steel... They were awful, but they didn't exactly make enough of an impact to leave a bad taste in our mouths. That's -6 points...
Marvel has Spider-man 1 and 2; X-men, X2, and The Last Stand; that's +5 points.
Hulk... Kind of in the grey. No point differance.
Every other Marvel film has had a much less than spectacular response. Daredevil, the Punisher, Ghost Rider and Electra; all critically panned. That's -Five
DC: 0 points
Marvel: 0 points.
We won't know for sure until more movies come out I guess.
I'll give you more tomorrow; I'm going to bed now.
Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy!

Ok.. sorry, I just put Hellboy there without thinking. But it's not a question of quality, it's a question of quanity. As far as MOVIES, then yea, DC has 10 just between Batman & Superman. But where's the rest? I know, Wondy is being devoloped, Shazam is, Flash. But come on, it shouldn't take that long. Bring in a writer that knows what they are doing and get it made. As for the ones that have "bombed" F4 did well enough to get a second movie, Hulk is being redone, and Ghost Rider brought in alot, and the DVD sells.. thats where the real money is anymore..

I'm not counting Vertigo, just like I didn't count Blade, and isn't Men in Black a Marvel Properity?

It's just a matter of opinion. I think it's closer to a tie because of the amount, but, yea, if not for BTAS, none of these shows would be made.

I don't buy DCD anymore.. they break, at least the ones I have do.
I just burns me up.. The fans spend so much money on DC, yet they can't treat them right. And we take it! And if we stop buying the toys? DC will not see it has a fact that we're unhappy with Mattel, they will think that the figures just are popular anymore.

I always forget one yes marvel had a limited run of MIB comics which in my opinion were bad
I have no beef with you over quantity if that was the case then I have no problem but it's not mentioned therefore a lot of contreversy ensues unless that was your point to create a long lasting thread so us blogers can beat our brains senseless arguing over DC vs Marvel till the cows come home and for that I envy but admire you

I won't do an exhaustive retread of what's already been said. For the most part, I agree with Beyond. Many of DC's movies are better, but Marvel has more movies period. Most of them are pretty good, which strengthens them even when Marvel's bad movies are taken into consideration. Marvel hasn't had a movie based on its characters that's as good as "Batman Begins," but they just have so many more.
With animated Tv shows, I still put DC as the winner. They've had an extremely strong animated presence since the '70s, and Marvel hasn't had any animated shows to match the quality of the DC toons from 1992 to the present. Even the lackluster "The Batman" is better than the standard Marvel cartoon.
Same with animated movies. DC has been releasing animated features since the early '90s. The quantity and quality of their animated movies is far superior to the Marvel animated efforts. Marvel's recent features, in particular, are marred by some seriously weak animation. Even for all the animation flaws in the 15-year-old "Mask of the PHnatasm"-- due to rushed production and relatively low budget-- the quality of animation in the recent Marvel animated features fall short. This should only become more pronounced as DC's newest animated features begin coming out regularly, beginning in September.
Really, the only category where I would say Marvel is the clear-cut winner is with movies. Hopefully, DC and WB will get it in gear. They've made some pretty strong steps forward with several of their projects recently, so there's hope there.

Well, clearly, most of us think DC is better, other wise we'd be psting on a Marvel board right now..
But, yea, I do wonder how you all feel, again, opinions are just that, and I think we have a good thread going on here. The questions in the Title is "Who Really is the best"
Well, duh, DC, but Marvel is stepping up and kicking their butts on alot of levels.

To give DC the edge on toys
1980's
DC Super Powers vs Marvel Secret Wars
winner: DC Super Powers collection no explaination needs to be given
Early 1990's
Marvel Toy biz vs DC Kenner
winner: DC Kenner
although Toy biz gained marvels license and gave us X-men which really would not have taken off if there was no TV series and the Marvel Superheroes Collection the figures were quite lackluster in quality they looked more like superpowers figures that they tried to rip off when with DC. Kenner had fresh ideas not so much with figures but with vehicles the Batmissile Batmobile and All-terrain Batskiboat clearly beat out anything Toy biz produced. Also another reason why kenner wins this Batman the animated series the figures rock and the vehicles were not at all "out there" they looked like they had designd=s that could have been incorporated into the show thank DC and WB this didn't happen though
mid to late 1990's
Marvel Toy biz vs DC kenner/hasbro round two
winner: Draw
Kenner was a powerhouse during the 1980's-1990's with the Ghostbusters line and superpowers and the relaunch of the Star Wars line but our focus is primarily on Batman and other DC lines let's start with Batman with the animated lines put on hold to focus on the movie "forever" we got treated in some ways to crime squad which was not a bad line but with so many bat-variations and only one Robin and no villians variations this along with Duo force was a real flop with both kids and collectors alike Kenner made up for it big time with the BF line of figures which threw away the repaints and overall rehash of previous figures with new sculpts and dynamic posesand a light up Batmobile what more do you want. This was however shortlived by the end of 1995 with the release of the massive Batcave now a gem with collectors this piece was not cheap to produce and the 59.99 price tag reflected it legends of Batman gave us a comic line full of elseworlds figures and comic acurate figures plus we finally got a nightwing and 3 versions of Az-bat's not accurately named but who cares they were awesome and pretty much the only figures people gave a damn about and the lline folded shortly after release Total Justice and Superman MOS were promising lines but the oversculpting of TJ (damn steroids) and availibility of the MOS line itself resulted in poor sales Superman and Batman would be redemed with the NBA an Superman TOS
Marvel was an up and coming powerhouse with X-men the line gave us pretty much every single character that was on TV and in the comics at that time but we never got a Julbilee figurenot counting Generation X for those who remember that line or comic accurate 1990's Jean Grey but we had an endless amounts of wolverine's lining up the pegs at least 8 variation in the basic line and Toy biz gave us Spider-man with awesome looking figures every villian you can think of even Mary jane for a box set even a cool Tri spider slayer and the huge Hobgoblin wing and Daily Bugle playsets were freaking awesome although we did have a numerous amount of spidey variations none were all that technicolor like bat's. We did the good now the bad much like their TV shows FF and ol shell head's toy lines folded due to poor planning and endless resculpts we did get some cool figures and accessories like that huge Galactus and the Fantasticar but the FF line was dull for me anyway. Iron man had some problems of the same but more the less stupid variations Toy biz would later redeem and then falter itself with it's collector toy lines of the late 90's like the 5 packs of X-men and Avengers and it's gold and silver age line (which we got a gwen stacy and grey Hulk out of) and the ever unpopular at the time due to unavailability Famous covers
early 2000's
Marvel Toy biz vs. DC hasbro
Winner: Marvel
Let's face it Hasbro had no more ideas for Batman no movie no TV show means no ideas but oh wait there still was the comic book but we got no comic based figures from Batman was officially dead in the water from the endless variants and repaints and store exclusive the only chance DC had of being a contender in this round was we finnaly got an Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Scarface and the Ventriloquist some decent show accurate Batgirl repaints and Tailia that's it
Toy biz released some decent X-men movie figures but the reason why Toy biz wins this round is Marvel Select and Marvel legends with the hyper possible action figures and a repo comic packaged with each figure what more could you want ant the select line was cool in it's own right Diarama pieces are always cool especially the Black cat meow.
It's 2 for DC and 1 for Marvel and a Draw
2003-2006
Marvel Toy biz and DC mattel
Winner: Draw
Mattel finnaly gets DC back on it's feet by winning the license away from Hasbro and we get a new animated line with new sculpts but with some re-releases with a batcave and a batplane to hold us over until the new Batman comic line plus The Batman a new cartoon and toy line intended for kids but we all know who is really buying the stuff is released The Batman comic line was a huge success except Mattel never learned from Kenner/Hasbro's mistakes and released more technicolor repaints and my major beef is with Robin we finaly get a comic accurate Robin not too buff and he has black gloves what the hell!! A new Tv show hits the waves starring the Justice League and we get toys awesome little toys but as the line goes on more repaints and mission vision accessories that no one in their right mind would use but the flicker cards and overall lokk of the figures made this a welcome addition to the line plus we got the watchtower which malfunctions a bit but no complaints from me it's a cool playset and the Javelin 7 with some cool play features as the show adds more characters so does the toy line and the not so much needed 3 packs my god how many batman's and Superman's does one need to go through to have one black canary no new vehicles or playsets for this line which is a downer but the shortpacked cases and the 100 only Hal Jordan figure the figure all fans want and the character everyone thought should have been included in the show was a real disapointment. The Batman was not so better with repaints and variants but since it's a kids line I don't mind and every year there is a new Batmobile which is cool but some of the ones released sucked or were sub-par The Batcave was a welcome addition at first but kind of odd since it's a cave but looks like a demented skyscraper and mine kept falling down when I displayed my figures on it but that's me. Mattel cancelled the batman comic line due to poor sales (see above for answers why) and therest of the line was sent overseas like Bane and Freeze and Bat signal Batman to name a few. Mattel replaced this with the DC superheroes line which makes no sense since Mattel can only do Batman and Superman nonetheless great figures were produced with new sculpts and Bane, croc, and Freeze were all rereleased under the new name.
Toy biz was still the reigning powerhouse producing fan favorite figures under marvel legends and even included pieces of a major big character like a sentinel wave was released and each figure had a piece of the sentinel that combined into the robot this had mixed reactions as some figures were shortpacked and it was nearly impossible to assemble the Sentinel finished pieces sold for about 45.00 on ebay at time of release.
2007
It looks as if 2007 will be the year of Marvel with Hasbro now learning from their mistakes of the past have gained the license from Toy biz and have produced fabulous toys for Spider-man 3, Origins, Marvel Legends, and Ghost Rider. With FF rise of the Silver Surfer on it's way expect some cool toys for that as well
DC on the other hand still with Mattel has only generated buzz with The Batman and Hot Wheels with their releases of the 1966 Barris Batmobiles and of course The Joker make his JLU appearance as a toy and those examples could take the crown who knows but as I see it it will always end up as a tie for both companies in my opinion but we have to wait and see for The Dark Knight toys next year but until then Marvel wins for 2007
so the final count
DC 2
Marvel 2
Draws 2

Whew, this is definitely a topic to get people active around th boards.
Admittedly, Beyond was definitely looking a little too hard at the quantity side of things. Marvel wins that in every category (comics being the exception) hands down.
Over the years we have been fed the line that DC characters are not so widely put out there because they want them treated right, and so they are cautious about who gets control over their mass releases. At least that is their justification for their lack of quantity.
Of course this is also the company that has never (to my knowledge) produced a movie not showing Superman or Batman that was worth watching. Not exactly a great example of their policy.
Marvel is so much more loose (relative to DC) with what happens with their properties that it has just totally blown DC out of the water with quantity. The consequence is that the quality is often less than stellar.
As for quality here are my thoughts:
Based on the movies that I have seen (which leaves out some of the worse ones) I would almost put them about even. I was personally not a big fan of X3, and we have overly discussed the flaws in some of the DC movies. Really, I could not put one franchise ahead of the other.
DC wins in the cartoon and TV realm. The Spider-man and X-Men cartoons were good and did some interesting things to adapt stories, but they really never did anything original. At least Batman and Superman: TAS had quite a few original stories, and the animation set a new level for quality taking us out of the cheaply animated era of the 80's.
Kennr/Hasbro had much higher quality plastic in the toys. The sculpts were also much better than Toy Biz, and the vehicles were amazing. Then Toy Biz really got their act together and put out Marvel Legends, setting a new standard for figures in sculpts and articulation. Toy Biz had the edge in character selection. Yes, they made enough variants of Spider-man and Wolverine to rival Batman, but they also made some characters that probably have not had more than 10 comic appearances. Marvel was again loose with their liscense and the fans of obscure characters benefitted. The only thing time that has happened is with Super Powers and Justice League Unlimited, but neither line can rival with Toy Biz did.

I wouldn't really consider Marvel more marketable because they are more colorful
I've been jaded by my career in marketing...either that, or you give the general population way more credit than I do
Still, I think you have to take into account the curb appeal of the different franchises. They were created in fundamentally different worlds, with DC being born before the TV & movie age and Marvel being a product of it. The Marvel characters were meant to live in the world of lights and noise, while the DC characters were originally meant to live in literature and imaginations. Yeah, I know it sounds corny, but I can't think of a better way to phrase it.
Something else that may have to be considered: the fan base. How many people are still alive that were here for the very first Batman or Superman comics? Now how many first-issue Marvel fans are still around? Heck, Stan Lee makes cameos in most of the Marvel movies. If you're optomistic, you can say that Marvel has a more vocal fan base and is catering to them, cranking out as much merchandise as possible. If you're a little more jaded, you can add in that it's probably trying to cash in as much as possible before Marvel gets "old" like DC.
