Thanks! It's either patience or madness, though I haven't decided which quite yet...

Here's today's progress: the dashboard is now done & ready for installation. The base is the Revell Futura dash, with a scratchbuilt TV, radio, and gauge panel. The steering wheel is out of AMT's Edsel (the 1:1 used an Edsel wheel after the Futura wheel was discarded).

And just so you all don't think I've been cooped up in the room with fumes for too long, I submit to you photograhic evidence that all these things were actually stuck to the 1:1 for a while:

Tomorrow: Engine installation!

Hey Spence, how's it going? I have been out for quite a bit. I have been checking on the site, however I don't have the time to log in a post comments, shout etc. But dude that is an awesome piece of art there! I can't wait to see the final product. BYTB smilebig grin

Thanks!

Well, after spending about four hours of hacking and cursing, I finally got the engine squeezed into place:

Today had to be a short day at the bench, but it was enough for me to get the radiators sorted out:

I'm using the radiators out of the Monogram Lamborghini Countach kit, because of their size and built-in electric fans. I figure if they can cool a hot-running Countach, they should be able to work in the Batmobile as well.

I mounted them horizontally in front of the engine, with the idea being that they will pick up cold air from under the car. Some ducting and a protective screen will ensure proper functioning and safety. Plus, down here they're safe from one of Batman's rogues putting a bullet through the cooling system and stopping the car.

Here is today's progress:

The top end of the engine is now (almost) complete, and yes, the hood still fits! The carbs are out of the Thunderbolt kit, but the fuel lines, linkage, vacuum lines, and hoses are all scratchbuilt. The only thing I still need to add up top is a return spring for the linkage, then I need to add the generator and belts and I should be done with the engine.

Spencer what scale is this? Or have I just missed it previously in the thread?

Nope, you didn't miss it - it looks like I forgot to mention it. It's 1/25 scale (for those unfamiliar with it, the overall car is about 9 inches long). It's the scale I work in 95% of the time, so sometimes I don't remember to note it when I start new builds. Sorry about that!

I now have the exhaust system & driveshaft installed in the Batmobile:

A full muffler/catalytic/resonator system is in place for when Batman is going stealth, but when he needs more power he flips a switch on the dash and a pair of valves open up the dump pipes and let the beast free.

With the exhaust system dry, I popped a set of junk box wheels on my Batmobile so that I could turn it right-side-up and start detailing this side. The trunk got an oil slick tank and the Batcomputer...

...while the interior got the first of many greebles. Like with the rest of the car, I'm trying to strike a balance between accuracy and dignity. So far, it doesn't seem too bad.

Oh, I also had glued the hood on last week but couldn't shoot it thanks to the exhaust system drying. I think the double hinge works well; it allows the hood to open all the way without cutting off the tip, and since it lays flat in the closed position it takes up very little space in the engine bay:

A bit more interior work this weekend:

The seats and carpeting are in, and I built the camera (or whatever it is) for the center console. I've also installed the shift lever and pedals.

I also added a little extra "oomph" for those high speed pursuits: a JATO rocket bottle.

This weekend was short on time, so I was only able to get a little bit more done on the Bat:

The JATO bottle is now done thanks to a custom decal. I also scratchbuilt the exhaust and installed it.

Thanks! I got some more interior work done, and finished off a bunch of details that have been nagging me (including the fuel fill).

Also, to follow up on the scale question, I thought a size comparison might be helpful:

Here is today's update. We even got some good sunlight here today, so I was able to shoot the pics outside:

The canopies have been trimmed & installed, the dashboard/door panels are in, and the scratchbuilt roll bar is painted and ready for detailing.

Spencer - going back to the body, did you buy this? If so what it is?

& re the painting, how do you do it? Is it just a brush? or do you spray? How do you get such neat red trim?

It looks fantastic.
