While diving for sunken treasures to avoid having to get a job, Matt Hagen discovered a secret rainbow colored pool. When stepping closer for a better view he slipped on a wet rock beneath him and fell into the pool. He discovered the pool was not water at all, it was more of a plasma-like substance. He felt it clinging to him, feeling what he thought to be energy going through his body. As he crawled out of the pool he noticed it had turned him into a mound of brown. As he was thinking he wanted to return to the way he had been before the accident his shape began to change, making him his former self. He found he could send energy from his mind through his body, causing him to change into any shape he desired. He used his shape-changing ability to start a crime wave on Gotham.

Hagen was ultimately killed during Crisis on Infinite Earths.
